I did and DO like the Helix.... I just wanted to pair everything down and go more simply. As a bass player, I was always a plug and play guy.... As much as I like the Helix it was REAL overkill for my, and I would often fall into the abyss of TWEEKING too much..... So. I am going for something simpler. And as I said, I am playing in more acoustic settings and smaller venues. Brian's playing and sound really appeal to me.... I can really hear a Pat Metheny influence their. So, I am thinking going Boss ME 80, or one of the line6 stomp box pedals like the M-9 or M-5. Any suggestions. Thanks all for your time and comments, by the way! |

Ahh, that's cool, I totally respect that. As someone who has a lot, I mean a LOT of gear, I often like the idea of things sometimes more so than the actual implementation. I have a Helix sitting in the box that I haven't even touched yet, 'cause my time is so focused on my playing ( I haven't changed my patches on my two GT100's since I first made 'em up haha). The Helix is cool, but it's big, eh? The thing is a tank... I have an M9 and an M5 that I picked up because I just didn't want to lug my GT100's around. Very effective, and easy to set up, plus they sound good (I play through a Roland Jazz Chorus JC120). And very portable... M5 on bass side, M9 on the Melody side. Have you considered perhaps the Mod Duo? It looks like it might be an option too? (Skydiver would have the details...) |

I’m curious if Randy will actually need the subwoofer. I’ve tried Fishmans column PA’s, they do lack bass for my tastes. The Performer has a larger cabinet than the old Loudbox I had, and sound really nice, the low end wasn’t bad at all to my ears. Granted it will not work in a metal band, but I’m thinking he’s going to be OK just with the Performer. |

MichNS.... Coming from strictly being a bass player, I LOVE to hear that low fundamental !! I would probably be ok with out it, but I GOTS TO HAVE IT!!! lol |

Two major influences on me getting the Fishman in 2011: 1) I'm getting old, thus tired of lugging around big equipment. I wanted something small and portable so I wouldn't have excuses on missing out on small living room jams with friends. 2) Bob Culbertson. I met & heard him (among many other wonderful players) at the 2011 Vancouver Seminar. Somehow, we Stick players lean towards much gear and stuff. That's great. But the amazing Bob played through...an amp. Period. Granted, this amp was some sort of prototype Stick Enterprises influenced "Stick Amp" that never made it off the ground. But it had great sound and could be carried with one arm. So after the seminar, I searched for something similar. At the time, many on this list used the Fishman Loudbox Artist 100 (predecessor to the 120 I have) as a practice amp and loved it. It's worked well for me and that's all I know. |

I would probably be ok with out it, but I GOTS TO HAVE IT!!! lol Same here, was a tough decision for me to sell my Mark bass amp setup and go with the Helix/PA combo, but having a bass, two acoustics, two Sticks and an electric guitar gets insane having specific amps for everything. In the last 3 years most of the live performances I've done have been mostly guitar, some Stick, but no bass as I'm surrounded by several bass players. |

Very interesting discussion guys. I have been looking at the Fishman Loudbox Performer also as an easy solution to this "getting old" issue and wondered about how it would sound vs the 'Artist' Loudbox. I did not look at the Mesa Boogie line as I didn't know they had an option along this line. I did research on the Fender and the Carvin amps (sadly they are going out of business), but kept coming back to the Fishman line. Steve A just posted about the Epiphani line he uses, and while they are an awesome sounding duo, it is overkill for me at this point in my playing. I have the Roland VG-99 Steve suggested and it is great for melody side fx. I wanted something for the bass side... perhaps just some reverb, echo, delay, etc., nothing major. I have 2 QSC-12's I used to use as the PA for my previous band, so I ended up pairing them with a Behringer Xenyx 1202 fx mixer so I can get the bass fx. I'm not sure I'm running all the cables correctly yet as I am only using one QSC rather than both (for practice at home... I haven't done much public playing yet), so not in stereo at the moment. Anyway, this is very interesting. I may still opt for the Loudbox, so I'll be curious to see the comparison between the Artist and Performer amps. |

One other thing to add about Fishman, the Loudbox is one of the few amps out there that has a serial circuit for effects. Most amps are paralllel and do not give you a 100% wet signal. I used to have an Acoustic Image amp and never liked the efffects loop. Glenn Poorman showed me this way back when I had both. So if you are using a lot of effects and want them going through the amps effects loop, chances are the Fishman will sound the best. Haven’t heard about the Mesa Boogie’s effects loop, but I have owned one of their tube amps before and it was pretty good. Edit, site says parallel effects loop for Mesa Boogie. |

I haven’t been actively performing the last couple years but after owning a Fishman SA220 for a while I moved to a QSC KW122 for deeper bass response. It sounded nice but the 50lbs became a nuisance. I got a lighter RCF HD12A which is a great, simple full range amp for the full effects setup, and for an easy all in one solution for smaller gigs I got a Fishman Loudbox Performer. It sounds very nice, good quality preamps, and got a bit more bass than the Soloamp and can also be set up as a wedge monitor. I’d be curious to hear the more recent Fishman SA330x with SA Sub but it’s a bummer they omitted the effects loops on that one. |
