GAS - pick up for a DBR 10 string grand
Hi Peeps.
What do you folk think of the benefits of EMG vrs Pasv 4 as applied to a DBR 10 string grand.
I remember Greg's "Rain Dodgers' vid was PASV 4, and I'm not normally a fan of the EMG sound. The only real virtue I can hear in the EMG is that it has a pretty solid bass response and might suit DBR overall.
Whadayathunk?

Having a tone knob makes all the difference for me with the EMG. I really like being able to roll tone on or off depending on the tune I am playing and the newness of the strings.
After that, it's all personal preference. I've enjoyed the sensitivity of the EMGs, but do miss having options for tone control with the PASV-4.

Re: GAS - pick up for a DBR 10 string grand
Hi GP.
Yeah, I felt like I would have to relegate myself to the perceived limitation of EMG, as compared to PASV 4, just so I would really own that sound. It's not a sound I've been attracted to over the years, I'm just keeping my ears open to it, I can hear its signature now a little more now.
They seem to be quite different beasts though...
I'm trying to view this from the overall picture of owning 3 sticks by early next year. I've had the PASV 4 for 10 years to the month. I figured I could do with different sound colours. I'm also wondering if there is any tendency by the different pick ups, to be slightly more suited to different ways of playing. Probably splitting hairs here, aesthetically.
So the total picture will look like. 10 string classic - PASV 4 10 string grand DBR ....? Railboard
All heavy gauge strings , though I am tempted to go medium on the Railboard. It's the low melody and higher bass strings I love in heavy gauge.

Yes, the EMG has slightly more bass response. Love it on my DBR Grand. The P4 sounds really beefy in the middle position but isn't as focused.
Another thing is the two Blocks feel different. The P4 has that warm analog sag like a tube amp. The EMG is very immediate and precise.
Both feel and sound great, but I prefer the simplicity of the EMG. With the P4 I spent too much time flipping through all the settings. Several good ones, couldn't decide!

Re: GAS - pick up for a DBR 10 string grand
My 10 string grand was origianlly built with the Passive 4, somewhere aloong the way it got swapped for the active 2. I'm not a huge fan of active pickups, but it sounds good, I would love to hear it with the passive 4.
Maybe I'll trade with someone that wants to do the opposite, and get my stick back to the original spec....

Re: GAS - pick up for a DBR 10 string grand
Three Sticks sounds great! I've been down to a single Stick for the past 5 years. I only use a single tuning, and have been tempted to pick up a 12 string, but I'm content with the 10. I recently acquired a Graphite 10 string and am having it set up. Same tuning, but with a PASV-4. I guess we're in a similar situation. I feel that the EMGs give you a feel as opposed to a tone. It's hard to explain, but in essence, it feels like with the 9v magnifying the sound, more of the feel comes directly from the instrument rather than from the pre-amp, pedals or amp. There are many here that like the sound of the Stickup in the left hand, have you ruled out a humbucker altogether? Loving this thread btw me' old!

I still hold to the virtue of that but I've come into a bit of money so I'm indulging my long held fantasies. In any other circumstances this would not be happening .. earthgene wrote: I feel that the EMGs give you a feel as opposed to a tone. Thanks for clarifying that. I can get just what you mean by that, funny how we're saying that about the active pick up and not the passive for example. Maybe that's why Bob C uses it a lot? earthgene wrote: There are many here that like the sound of the Stickup in the left hand, have you ruled out a humbucker altogether? Loving this thread btw me' old! I would LOVE to have a stickup. That sound is like the original stick DNA. The only thing is that a 10 string grand won't work on the stickup. I also feel that DBR in a 12 string is just going to be too close with string spacing for me. Spoilt for choice really, but these limitations I can live with. It's a lot like really getting used to the total sound spectrum on offer by SE.
