Very, very cool Dean. I thought I had ordered a mod duo, but I guess I didn't... lol the curse of being a shopaholic haha the stuff I WANT to buy, vs what I'm on the fence about vs what I actually DO buy haha

I'd love to see one of these things really put through their paces, is there any 'shred-worthy' footage anywhere?

Also, I am curious about the 'amp emulation' what's available and how they sound, and if when using, oh say a stereo instrument like a Stick, are more than one available (one for bass side, one for melody). I currently run two Boss GT-100's for my Stick, and I punch 'em into two Roland JC120's OR a portable PA... it is quite a pain to carry around the two processors, though. It would be nice to pair it way down...

I do like the option of overdrive, fuzz, delay and pitch (whammy, smart harmony) as well as volume and wah effects would be cool (possibly on both signal chains). Any old continuous controller works with it I assume (Ernie Ball Volume) right?

Ships to Canada perhaps? Email me my man...

I thought I'd answer your questions here since I think everyone can benefit from it.

Inside the platform you have total control over how things are routed and how many of something you want to use within it's CPU capacity.

The routing is really what got me excited about the Duo. The two audio inputs and the two audio outputs can be routed however you want. They are totally independent and can be combined and split however you can imagine.
Real world applications:
1. splitting the signal to different effects and then blending them back together. I do this with blending a clean sound with distortion especially with bass.
2. Creating an Aux send type of situation with reverbs/delays just like a mixing console. I think it sounds better to have my direct signal mixed in with reverbs rather than putting it through a mix control in the effect plugin. However, some plugins don't offer a full wet signal, in which case they usually have the clean signal going through without effect and blending the effect but this limits other effects I may want to blend...
3. The reverbs can take up a bit of CPU processing so I use one and send bass with highpass to the same reverb used by melody side. I highpass the bass side signal to the reverb to get rid of any frequencies that sound bad in reverb.

Amp emulations:
You can use as many amp emulations as you want! I used to blend multiple amp/cabs to get an amazing sound. WARNING: Amp/cab emulations use a lot of CPU... I use one per side of my NS.
Something I do is to use only a cab emulation and use a overdrive/distortion plugin as a "preamp". Since you are not stuck to the traditional signal flow you can put a distortion after the cab if you want... (to me it sounds pretty bad... but putting a reverb in front of crazy distortion creates an amazing sound!) But it freed me up from having to use a full amp to cab sim that takes up more CPU.
As for sounding like the real deal... I can't answer that since I am not an expert at how the originals sound. However, I have heard some good reviews about the JCM800, SVT, Vibro amps. The Lesli sim is amazing... it's the same one available in Harrison Mixbus.

The effects are amazing and keep getting better since it's an open platform and new ones keep coming out. (Soon a commercial plugin store will come online for the designers/companies who want to sell their plugins) Some standout plugins for me are Harmless (harmonic tremolo), Shiroverb (lush reverb with pitch control to have a detuned reverb or shimmer or whatever pitch...), Floaty (modulation/delay I use to thicken my sound with a 30ms delay), Bollie Delay (set up with 1/4 and dotted 1/8 to give that huge lead sounds). Just to name a few...

I don't use the pitch shifters because they use a lot of CPU! To be honest I was a little disappointed with that but I have a Whammy DT that I love and control using the Midi from the Duo. (there is a midi message sending plugin called Mindi)

Another trick I like to use is send a midi signal from my Sonuus G2M to trigger synth sounds and blend that with my bass. So fun!

There are soooo many distortion/fuzz/overdrive options that you really can't go wrong.

There are several wah options (and you can make your own with a eq sweep).
There are volume/gain plugins you can assign to an expression pedal but there is also the SlowGear plugin that emulates the late boss pedal...

Expression pedal:
There isn't an expression port on the Duo. There are a few ways to connect an expression pedal. Connect with a expression to Midi (serial or usb) converter like the Audiofront product or the one on the KMC SoftStep. Use the FCB1010 but that's pretty big and clunky. Make your own control chain device with an Arduino and their Arduino shield. (Actually pretty easy to do if you can do simple soldering. They have the program written) I recommend this.
MOD is coming out with their own expression pedal which is supposed to be out in the next couple/few months. It's harder that you think to develop a good pedal from scratch!
Edit: My experience with the expression pedal is using one through the KMI softstep but had an issue with it because there was a slight delay in the reaction of the wah... pretty annoying. I built an Arduino interface and there is no lag. It may just be the Softstep. It's fine for making volume adjustments.

As you can probably tell... the biggest limitation is the CPU. Below is a picture of my current "standard" pedalboard. You can see all the stuff I use from emulations, effects and utilities. This hits right around 80% CPU usage and don't recommend going over it. I've had to get creative with routing and what to use but I get an amazing sound.

The upside to is that everything, even the hardware, is open source and upgradable. In the future MOD will be coming out with a upgrade where it will have muuuch more CPU. I can't wait for it!

I edited the above to add my experience with the expression pedal.

Dean this sounds so cool. How's it sound plugged directly into a DAW? Is it good for playing live? I really don't know much about this thing beyond that people rally like it

It's designed for the stage so it sounds great!
Depending on how you set it up you can use it with an amp or direct to PA.
Guitarist are using it as a four cable system to have one signal chain in front of the amp and another in the effects loop.

If you are in the Boston area Claire may be generous enough to let you check it out. Claire is creating her own plugins using Max/MSP.

I will make a recording soon with just Duo sounds not effects after.

That's really cool. I'm so impressed with how far modeling tech has come. I'll have to ask Claire.

How does it do for recording? I'm most interested in a stereo home studio solution for taking the mic'd amp out of the mix.

I'd love to see/hear some more recorded samples also.

I'm an electrician/Instrumentation guy so building a continuous controller is pretty simple, actually. Although, ideally I'd like to use some of that expensive brand name stuff that I have kicking around...

Claire has an AxeFX (So do I) so I'd love to hear her impressions on it... Rob Gellner picked one up too I think!

I love my GT-100's for the Stick, I just hate carrying the things around is all...

Hey Dean,
I don't know if I would envy you being a "music retailer" but if you believe in your product,
and I know you do, and I believe in it too, because I have been in the room and heard the
results. So more power to you and I would love to have a MOD and you can put me on the list. The only thing is that I am a little phobic about the computer and the learning curves involved. I prefer to be a hardware guy :|.

If I buy one can I come over and pick up the unit and get a lesson to get set up at the same time? :).
Looking forward to seeing your new website. 8-)

JRJ!
You are always welcome to come over. I could even come to your place and get it so you have it all set up in your system... that way you don't have to try and remember anything after leaving my place...

Here is a sound sample of a song I'm working on called Feelings.
Still working on it and so just noodling some parts...

It's got a lot of reverb and delay on it so it may be a little out there...
Also a harmonic tremolo after the delay giving some dimension to the track.
It's a single take direct out from the Duo into my mixer/converter. Nothing done after.

Let me know if you want to hear something else or another way...
Here is the soundcloud link. https://soundcloud.com/user-935679982/feeling-test
Not sure if it will work in the post...

Damn that's directly out of the mod into your recording set up? That sounds excellent!
