Another thing that can help is to use a high pass filter to cut out any low rumble that may bleed through to the melody side. Not sure if there is a pedal that does that...

There IS a pedal that does that, and you can get one here!!https://www.greenelephantstudio.com/q-strip ;)

The Tech21 Q\Strip (that link goes to the manufacturer's product page, not a store listing) has a high-pass filter which is hard-wired for a 45Hz corner frequency: that would not be particularly useful in this scenario.

I guess 45Hz would be too high. What frequency is recommended for this application?

45Hz is too low:

It sounds like you are describing a job for a high-pass filter, not a noise gate. In your DAW, add a high-pass filter to your melody side's track; set it to the fundamental frequency of your melody side's lowest string.

The fundamental of the lowest melody string in classic tuning is D2 (about 73.4hz) so if you are trying to reject signals below that...(like from the low bass-side string) that' sort of a line of demarcation

not saying that strictly has to be your corner, but it gives you an idea of where we are talking about

the 45hz thing is more a "rumble filter" (so it's not misdesigned, it's just there for another purpose) to get rid of very low bass and subsonics which can cause other problems

I got that the impression that the OP was running directly into a DAW.

By the way, it is great to see you.

Thanks :-) !

@myStickal.adventure,
Get an audio interface with two inputs for your DAW and record the two Stick side outputs as one mono track each! Then you are free to either slap noise-gate plug-ins on the files or edit manually to silence the recordings between notes. I've done that a lot; it gives great results, but is annoyingly time-consuming.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I do have a two-channel interface and was running my Stick into an SP13, then into each channel of my interface, with two separate tracks within my DAW... it turns out it was user error and I didn't realize that I had BOTH channels on the SP13 panned to center - so both sides of the stick were coming through both channels *facepalm* :roll: How embarrassing.

I will definitely take all of your tips into consideration as I continue working on this process. Thanks!

That's the type of mistakes we do when we are excited by playing the instrument. TYhe musical flow just seems to block out strategic "engineering thinking" :-) I'm failing all the time in this department... LOL

My fav method for recording the STick is actually to play with the two fretboards panned left/right and record a stereo file/track. Then, in the DAW, I copy that file to a second track and slap plugins on the two tracks to isolate the two fretboards. I think it is convenient with the stereo file as the two Stick sides stay in sync whatever you're doing in the DAW.

I've been away for a bit and the website went through a change so the link is different.

Here is the correct link for the Q-strip at Green Elephant Studio...
