Post Compressor Pedals
.

I'm thinking about building up a Stick pedalboard so I don't need a computer to perform. A compressor pedal seems to be pretty important. Which ones do you all use? I've been trying out a Boss CS-3 and a Carl Martin. The Carl Martin is more adjustable but requires an AC outlet. The Boss is less flexible bur takes up less space and will power from a pedal power supply. Anyone using a CS-3 with one of the mods available?

as for pedal compressor i use the TC electronic hypergravity
it has multiband function so you can compress different eq band for different setting

I've used a CS-3 in the past, and loved what Bill Frisell did with them back in the day. I have had good luck with the Xotic SP and the Janglbox Nano.

Of course, if you're serious about compression, look no further than this:

Compressors are a double-edged sword especially on the bass side 5ths tuning because of the wide range of string mass from low to high which triggers the compressor unevenly. I find when you have the low 3 strings contained nicely, the high ones can sound pinched. On the melody side, a guitar stomp box comp doesn't have that issue. The more control parameters available the better though. Attack, release, ratio are a must for my ear. Compressors can easily be kinda brutal on Stick when to my ear they should be effective but transparent.

Yeah, the bass side is tricky, and I agree with you on all counts. I don't use compression on the bass side, the SP-2 pre-amp. I expect that this would be a great application for multi-band compression, but that's starting to look like a rack rig now...

Not a fan.

I would try life without and then revisit if you think you need it.

I have a few "special" patches for pad like swells that I crank the compression up for but other than that, I prefer none at all.

I’m with Glenn. Don’t use them when playing live: I like to be in total control of the dynamics. I do use them when recording the stick but that is just when mixing/mastering.

I've been working on an Allan-Holdsworth-like (but clean) legato technique for playing bebop lines on the melody side. The compression helps a lot for that.

I can agree with this sentiment, but then again perhaps it's because maybe I never used one properly ??

I actually took a recording class just to learn about how compressors and limiters work, and I think for me I like limiters a little better.

Back in the day, I used 2 DOD rack mount limiters in series, it worked like a reverse reverb and had super long sustain, sounded wonderful when followed by my old digitech Bass harmony Machine.

But I just recently did by a compressor pedal, and I want to say it was made by TC Electronics.

I'll have to dig it out and see which one it is..... and see if it is stereo in/out or just mono.

Since I run my sticks mono, this is not an issue with me.

Compressors don’t do much for me either . I’ll use things like an alembic pre amp modeler which get me something more subtle in the same vein
