Post Portable recording studio for Stick.
Has anyone tried to use a tablet as a minimalist portable recording studio?

I bought a Samsung Tablet S7+ to test this concept.
I purchased Steinberg's Cubasis 3 DAW & Studio.
https://download.steinberg.net/download ... Manual.pdf

The Zoom H4N is my portable audio interface for Cubasis on Android.
Although, it's nowhere near the quality of the Helix Floor, it works.

I am using an iPad with Auria DAW. As interface I plug in an iConnectivity Audio4 via lightning cable. Really nice and handy setup. The Audio4 has really nice routing options. Using the app AudioBus several effects can be used and a midi foot switch can be plugged into the Audio4 for controlling the effects.

Edit: concerning the routing options: the signal can be sent through an effect app on the tablet to a Mac or PC with a DAW. So the tablet becomes an effect device… really cool 8-)

The Zoom H4N can be used on it's own as a pocket amplifier with some effects. My favorite is No:40 Spring. It's very effective as a portable practice amp and recorder.

My Studio setup is the Helix Floor directly into the back of a Roland JC-120 amp, bypassing the JC-120 pre-amps. There's virtually no floor noise unless the Helix generates them in one of the amp models.

I discovered that the Zoom H4N does not require batteries when connected to the tablet.
It powers up automatically when the USB cable connects to it.
Also, the H4N onboard effects are only available in 44.1 kHz

I'm currently trying to solve an audio recording dropout issue with the Steinberg Cubasis DAW. Cubasis appears to be stuck in 48 kHz. If I set my H4N to 48 kHz, I cannot use the H4N onboard 'Spring Reverb' effect that I like. Some internet research claims that it's a setting in the tablet, not Cubasis. I will have to research this further.

As a side note, the H4N makes for a great pocket amp and recorder.
I've currently got the line out plugged into my home stereo with 15" bass drivers.
I must admit that this sounds pretty good for such a minimalist setup. 8-)

I bought a small diesel Sprinter 'camper van' last fall for $3800 CAD.
I can envision plugging the portable H4N and Stick into the camper's stereo system.

This sounds very cool! Congrats for this solution!

I have 2 battery amps. The Spark mini which is really handy and the Roland BA 330, which is more a PA. My wife and me use these for jams at the beach and street music. When my RB arrives next week I will give them a try. I am womdering if Spark mini will handle the low frequencies of the stick… it may be interesting to use the Spark mini as effect device and to plug it into the Roland. We will see … :)
The H4n looks awsome for ontheroad-recording! I wiill check my music store… thanks for the clue :)

I sometimes use my H4n plus a set of headphones to allow me to practice away from my 'music room'.

I'd not tried using the built in effects. Maybe I'll give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Page 146 - No: 40 - Spring Reverb. It sounds good on the H4N.

Set the H4N input gain down to 25 to remove any floor noise.
Use only good quality cables between the H4N and Stick.
I have one set of cables that are terrible, so I don't use them.

As seen in this video, 44.1 kHz is available in Cubasis 3,
but on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ that's not an option.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DdRh4S ... leMusicPro

So far, I'm stuck with 48 kHz as the only option.
I have to figure out if it's possible to change the audio sample rate
on the tablet in order to get Cubasis to make 44.1 kHz an option.

Post Re: Portable recording studio for Stick.
The problem with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ is the USB driver is fixed to 48 kHz.
The reason that I chose the Tab S7+ was the amazing 120hz AMOLED display.
These are the best displays available on any tablet.

My temporary solution to the 44.1 kHz problem was to purchase another Digital Audio Workstation called Audio Evolution Mobile Studio which has a proprietary USB driver that bypasses the tablet's driver and talks directly to the internal DAC. I tested this system and it works Ok. https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... n_CA&gl=US

I can now play my Stick while plugged into the H4N as an audio interface to my new tablet DAW at 44.1 kHz while enjoying my favorite internal 'Spring Reverb' effect that only works in 44.1 kHz mode.

The only catch with this setup was that even though I purchased the full version, they limited me to 45 seconds of recording unless I purchased their USB driver as an additional add-on. I think that it was $12 CAD for the app and $7 CAD for the USB driver. The playback quality of the new DAW is not as good as Cubasis. I'd still like to find a USB driver solution for the Cubasis DAW.
