Another great idea. I was thinking about the same idea. I will know more as I begin to play and use the monopod. I'm in the final stages of development, so it won't be long before I start to use it.

It's not the prettiest job, but it should be functional.
I still have a few more things to do:

I'm considering to paint the plywood base block a solid color for aesthetic reasons.
I need to make a cover for the top of the monopod, again for aesthetic reasons.
I need to attach the base mount to the Stick with VHB tape.

Other than that, the project is looking ok.
It will hopefully solve my standing and sitting issues while playing the Stick.
I mostly play while laying down on my back.

I've decided to paint the base mount a metallic silver color.
This will somewhat match the color of the monopod .

The attached photo shows the first coat of paint.
More sanding and paint is required for finishing.

I've found some thin 3M VHB tape to mount the base to the Stick.
I decided to also use two small countersunk screws as added insurance.
With these two methods of fastening, the Monopod should be a success.

Today, I finished the installation of my home built Chapman Stick monopod. The only thing left to do, is make a cover for the top of the square tube for aesthetic reasons. I've spent some time playing the Stick at different heights. It's fun to be able to walk around the instrument while playing it. I think that this setup will work fine for my purposes. It has been a fun project and I'm pleased with the final product. Photo attached.

Finished my prototype as well. It's good but not perfect. Putting the leg to the player's left of the stick seems like a mistake, because when your stomach bumps against the stick it's able to spin away from you. I need a stiffer assembly of some kind to limit oscillation. Partly it's because I used a thin leg, but much of it is coming from the belt hook itself flexing (it's an old-style hook--are new ones stiffer?). I'll have to make a shorter version for seated play at some point.

Flexing of the hook & its mount are an issue with the Sitdown/Standup stand I made based on a cymbal stand. Even though the Stick is firmly clamped there's still a significant level of 'bounce' through that mount. The 'bounce' is there both with my Ironwood #1642 from 1985 and my Graphite #5862 from 2013. It may be a little less with the newer Stick, but the difference is small enough it's hard to be sure?


PS. Is that a 3 digit serial number I can make out on the headstock? Maybe #724?

Hey Paul, my 1978 had the aluminum belt hook on it.
It did bounce when I had it installed on my original Stick Stand.

I like my telescopic monopod very much. It's so much fun to use.

My next little project is to design a belt hook for the Zoom H4N pocket amp. I've ordered some shorter cables from Amazon, so that I won't be dragging any cables around while practicing. The H4N will be powered from a 26800mAh USB flat pack battery. I ordered a 6" USB power cable to connect the flat pack to the H4N. I've ordered a 36" stereo to dual mono cable to attach the H4N to the Stick. I use WESTONE in ear monitors while practicing. They are a good choice for musicians. https://westoneaudio.com/

Several months ago, I bought the Zoom F6 field recorder with float mode recording. I also purchased a 10ft carbon fiber pole and the RODE NTG5 mic. This was for another project that I was working on. Although the F6 doesn't have any effects, it's yet another option as a portable Stick amp. It can record up to 6 inputs at the same time, while catching the slightest whisper to the loudest tones without clipping on all channels simultaneously.

I've seen that flexing you refer to in videos of the cymbal stands. I guess now I know why!

It seems that the stick would tend to rotate. What is keeping it oriented properly – perhaps your hands or the shoulder strap?

I'm currently working on the H4N - with 26,800 mAh battery pack setup.
I've used velcro to attach them to each other, and added a 6 inch power cable.
My next task is to figure out how to design a method of hooking them on to my belt.

I received the 1 meter stereo to dual mono cable, but my custom cable sounds better.
There's a bit of floor noise generated with the new cable. My design uses XLR cables.
The stereo to XLR adapter fits on the Stick. The dual mono to XLR cable is custom made.
The advantage of this system, is that I put whatever length XLR cable extension in between.
The floor noise on this system is almost non-existent. It's a great system.
