Newtone Strings

I've not tried them. IIRC WerkSpace has?

Newtone Strings are top notch, I'm using it for 3/4 years now.
But since Brexit, you have to pay some duties as well. But they are still cheaper than SE strings with taxes/transport fees hands down.
I know french stick player Thierry Carpentier is playing some set of strings developed by a french craftsman (sorry, I forgot his name/brand), and he praised his work on various posts on Facebook. Maybe you can get in touch with him directly to check the name of that guy.

I use NewTone strings on the (1978) Stick #404.

However, I prefer SE strings on the Railboard. 8-)

Yup. Fact of life (unfortunately) for those of use outside the US.

20 years ago, back in my home state of Texas, I could order a string set from SE for around $35 plus maybe $5 to mail it.

Now living in Canada...String sets, international shipping, customs/duties, AND horrible exchange rate (CAN is weak against USD), it costs me almost $100 for a set. Times change.

Last time I was in the US (Interlochen 2019), I was meeting up with my mother so I ordered three sets and had them mailed to her for me to bring back home. I've since gone through those 3 sets...so, back to $100 strings for me! No other Canadian alternative that I know of. At least, the sets put together by SE are 100% accurate.

One thing's for sure: I don't change strings flippantly.

You guys are great! Thanks a lot!! Just ordered from Newtone, so two minutes after reading your helpful posts, PayPal sent my money . Now I'll have to wait and see if there's any customs or taxes waiting for me ... but you can't do without strings, now, can you?

Thanks again everyone!

In 2015, I had attempted to purchase strings directly from SE,
but I was unable to get them. So, I looked for alternatives.
It wasn't about the money, it was about getting strings.

I found a website called Strings Direct and ordered my Newtones from them.
Shortly after posting this information on the Stick forum,
all references for Stick strings on the Strings Direct website disappeared.

I ordered 4 Newtone sets in total. A sample set, then a follow up order.
Years later, I was finally able to get a set from SE, but I didn't like them.
I preferred the Newtone strings on my (1978) Stick #404.

I didn't like the Newtones on the Railboard, but the SE strings worked great.
One set of strings may sound great on one instrument but not the other.
The set from SE were originally for the Stick but sounded better on the Railboard.

Since you have them on a 1978 Stick is it safe to assume that the 10 string set ".008-.091-.018 10 string" is intended as an equivalent for SE light Classic 10?

That would suggest that ".008-.095-.012 12 string" might be light Classic 12?

The other 12 string set ".009 -130-.010 12 string" seems odd.

The melody melody side are slightly thicker than the other 12 string set, but while the bass strings are thicker from 7 to 10, strings 11 & 12 are thinner! Any ideas?

Code:
.008 .009 .012 .018 .026 .091 .065 .040 .022 .018

.008 .009 .012 .018 .026 .038 .095 .065 .040 .022 .018 .012

.009 .011 .013 .022 .032 .042 .130 .085 .049 .026 .014 .010

David, from my notes, here's what I have.
On the bass side Newtone strings, I replaced the .018 wire wound
with a .013 plain string, because I didn't like the tone on that string.
