Hi all,

This is my second go around trying to replace my old MIDI foot controller with a KMI SoftStep 2. This time I just can't seem to get the expression pedal to work. I have a Roland EV-5 which, by all accounts, is tried and tested with the SoftStep. When I try to calibrate it though, it ends up just sending an instant on or off (nothing in between 0 and 127) and it appears to be inverted (even though the EV-5 doesn't have a polarity switch). So I'm wondering if I'm missing some manner of secret handshake before I declare this thing garbage and send it back for the last time.

I should also point out that sometimes it calibrates and starts to work. Then after a few minutes it loses its mind and doesn't work anymore.

You are not the first, nor the last.
Others have had similar issues.

- Inspect your USB cable or perhaps try another one.
- Possibly update the firmware or try doing a reset.

Last but not least, contact the manufacturer for help.

As it turns out, there is a defect with pedal calibration and the advanced editor so in the short term I'm stuck. There is a fix coming in the next month or so and the gentleman I was chatting with hinted that the latest editor updates are part of an upcoming SoftStep 3 release.

Since it's not really critical, I'm seriously considering returning the unit I have and waiting for the SoftStep 3.

Never tried calibration on my softstep2, as it worked more or less fine out of the box as it was initially, but now seems like calibration glitches for me as well. No visual confirmation of the calibration process finished, but CC stop being sended shortly after starting calibration. I could only reset it back to default.

I like my Softstep2, so it was kind of disappointing.

Well ... the editor software update that is supposedly coming at the end of next month is said to fix this issue and the software is back compatible with the SoftStep 2 so if you can wait a bit, you'll be good.

I did confirm with my retailer that the SoftStep 3 is coming and should be available in November. Very similar to the 2. Probably the biggest changes are the USB-C connection, the 1/8" TRS MIDI out (no need for the expander any more), and the two CV outs for Eurorack/synth control.

I returned the one I just picked up and am opting to wait.
