Post Re: Stick + Bow
I have to ask, is it really worth all the struggle to use a real bow on the Stick when the e-bow is pretty much perfect for it? It works on all strings (with ease), produces a great variety of tones (by interaction with pickups) and fits in yer pocket! :)

Cheers,

EG

YES!

The sound of a bow is essentially different from the sound of an e-bow. And BTW a cello bow is not much "struggle" since it fits into the Stick case :-)

Always enjoy a bit of spirited discussion, thanks, Per. :)

Yes, I guess an e-bow generated sound won't be quite the same as that from a real bow, but with the right amount of subtlety in application, I imagine it would get pretty close. It's certainly a different "gesture", from an ergonomic perspective, but I think most of the same results can be produced with the e-bow. (My favourite is a type of nasty pizzicato, achieved by bouncing the e-bow on the string after setting up a solid vibration!)

Just IMHO, of course, as I've never tried using a "normal" bow on the Stick. I just couldn't be bothered, hehehe.

Cheers,

EG

Instead of discussing sound I'd like to post this clip of playing my grand with the cello bow:

By the way, I am actually having problems using my e-bow with my PASV4 Stick. It just can't make the Stick strings vibrate. Is this a known issue with the PASV4 pickup model? I have no problems whatsoever to use my e-bow with all kind of electric guitars, so it is a logical guess that the PASV4 gets in the way.

Hi Per,

Did you only try it above the pickup or elsewhere, too? I hold my ebow on top of the fretboard when I use it (I like the sound much better). I may be wrong, but at that position the pickup shouldn't have any influence (I have a Stickup).

Cheers,
Johannes

Thank you for the advice, Johannes! It actually works higher up on the fretboard. I never tried that because on guitars it sort of works three times better over the neck pickup. Quite weak influence on the strings but works for slow attack notes on the thinner ones.
