Post STEP-A-BOUT Question
Unfortunately right now I can't aford one anyway but I was wondering ... does the STEP-A-BOUT have a TRS input or only 1/4 inch dual mono inputs?

Ah so it doesn't have a TRS input. That answers that question. Thanks!

...and it's got to be 'StepABout'!
See what they did there with the 'AB'? ;-)

My question had to do with the ability to use a single TRS cable coming from my Stick rather than a TRS to split dual mono cable with it. The unit looks awesome and everyone raves about it. Maybe someday I'll have the extra cash? ;) Having ordered an NS Stick I sure don't have the cash today!

Hi Ray,

The original proto had a TRS in like the Rane SP-13, but I wanted the unit to be user-friendly for lots of different instruments, so we went with two 1/4 inch ins instead. It turns out it's a great preamp for eletric bass, electric guitar and even acoustic instruments with pickups.

So for someone who was a bassist and wanted to run their Stick (bass side) and bass through the same rig, you could use the StepABoutTM to preamp those two signal paths, and then use something else to preamp your melody side.

You can find several suggested routing possibiities for different instruments here:

StepABout is a trademark of Greg Howard

Post Re: STEP-A-BOUT Question
Just a quick question or two:

I'm assuming the signal path is
Input 1 -> EQ section -> Volume -> routing matrix [ A, A and B, B ]
Input 2 -> EQ section -> Volume -> routing matrix [ A, A and B, B ]

Is the headphone/tuner output summed after the Volume section?

At first I didn't get why you used the tiny switches as opposed to the more "manly" (heh) true bypass switches that are common on floor units. I think it's so that if you are sending output to A and you want to switch it to B, you can tap both switches simultaneously. With "normal" switches you would probably have to tap one then the other which would give you a half second of over lap where both are on or both are off.

Also, I assume the headphone is mono but both L and R are driven. I had one piece of gear that is mono but they only drive the L or R headphone speaker.

I heard this amp in November 2006 and I'd have to say that it sounds great. Much better live than the sound samples -- not that the sound samples are bad.
