Post portable 2-channel audio input for iPhone?
Hi everyone, just got an iPhone and was wanting to use it for practicing while traveling. Is there a two-channel input device out there for this device that's tiny?

Thanks!

When I was at NAMM I looked around a bit for stuff like that, the two that seemed relevant were:

Tascam IU2
http://tascam.com/product/iu2/
Doesn't look particularly small however

Sonoma GuitarJack
http://www.sonomawireworks.com/guitarjack/
small and well built, but the stereo input is 1/8" based and may expect line level, perhaps not ideal

Wouldn't be surprised if there are other alternatives...

Thanks, Rob!

I can't tell from the websites whether the Tascam unit requires the AC power or if that is just an aide for reducing power consumption from the phone. I like how small the Guitar Jack 2 is. That might just be the ticket.

There are a bunch of options, but I haven't seen anything that specifically has two instrument inputs. Most have a combination that includes one instrument in and up to two mic/line ins. But you probably already have what you need to deal with level matching. The GuitarJack info says something but 60dB of level control on the 1/8" input.

Here's another from Line6 with 1 instrument and a stereo line in: http://line6.com/mobilein/ (I haven't tried it)

Another thing you'll need to look at is how the software is handling the audio inputs. I'm not sure that a lot of the specific guitar-rig apps can process more than a single channel. Garageband should be able to do it, just setup two different tracks.

It's single-channel Greg, but the Apogee Jam is a great product...

I agree with Kris; Apogee's JAM is a great interface, albeit mono.

This is almost a Holy Grail search for Stick players. The best mono input is probably the Apogee Jam. It is 24 bit and dead quiet. What I want is a two-channel version of the Jam, but it doesn't exist yet.

This product from Alesis is getting close:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AmpDock

I'm going to check that out thoroughly once it's been released. However, it is not small and portable.

The other side of the issue are the apps. There aren't any apps that can deal with both channels the way we need them to. GarageBand can see channel 2 but it can't process both channels at the same time. I have experimented with GB processing the high side and AmpKit the bass side. It is just not satisfactory.

As many of you know, I teach iOS development at a college and I am so frustrated with this that I'm starting the learning process so that I can write the app I want. Audio processing is one of the hardest programming tasks. Kudos to Rob Martino for being a pro in this area. I have the summer off, we'll see how far I get.

I assumed too much of GarageBand. Looks like you can't monitor or record more than one track at a time regardless of your I/O. I know there are apps that do multitrack recording but I haven't tried them.

I recently got the Jam, happy with it so far.

There's the iRig

But it's mono. Sigh...

Hey Greg - here's most probably the best solution:

3 mic or line inputs (remember the iPhone has only a mono input and cuts off low freqs at about 200_Hz)

10 hours of battery :D
