Post subject:  WTB: Looking for Stick for newbie in Ontario - Quebec region

Hello all,
As a newbie, I'm looking for a used Stick in the Toronto-to-Montreal corridor. I would be willing to drive within this area to view and pickup as I am centrally-based between these two urban centers. This can be extended to Quebec City in a pinch.

Although I'm new to the community, I have recently met an experienced Stick player who has offered to give their opinion on price and suitability of the offered instrument.

Please 'private message' me on this forum (if it's possible) or email me at mdc.hammer@gmail.com.

Thanks!
Martin

Martin, finding an affordable Stick might take a while.
I found both of my Sticks by using the following search words, Chapman Stick Kijiji

I paid $1200 CAD for my 1978 Stick and $2500 CAD for my Railboard.
Both instruments are in excellent condition and get played often.

The trick to finding anything in life, is to be constantly looking.
Something will eventually turn up, but it takes time.

There is a guy in Toronto selling an overpriced Stick at the moment.

I don't think that he will get what he is asking, but you never know?

@WerkSpace Thanks for the tips. I will continue to search and hopefully will have something to show for my efforts within the decade!

Yes. Unfortunately. I've noticed used Stick prices have risen steeply since Nov 2021 (Emmett's death). Sellers are often asking for MORE than what a new one currently is priced at, which is kind of ridiculous. I received my new Bamboo 10-string last summer after an 18 month wait. The wait time may have been reduced by now, but I wouldn't know. The wait used to be 6-8 months prior to the pandemic (supply line issues), recent staffing shortages at Stick Ent, and Emmett's death.

I doubt that any Stick would be found for these prices now (sorry!). But hey, you never know. I'll keep an eye out. I always do.

You may want to consider buying from a seller willing to ship, since used Sticks are so rare in Canada.

I am considering selling my 10-String Padauk in a year or so. I'm not 100% set on doing this yet. But I LOVE love the newer, smaller Fret Rails included on my new Bamboo, thus considering selling the Padauk to fund another new Stick purchase. The Padauk has the larger Fret Rails (2012) which wouldn't make any difference to a beginner. But I can tell. I just don't know if it's worth parting with yet.

If SE offers Wenge or Chechen hardwoods as an option again, I might put the Padauk up for sale for a reasonable price.

Thanks Brian. I will certainly consider a purchase from a US seller. My initial thought was to buy from someone who was within reasonable driving distance, but if there aren't any, I will entertain all possibilities. I am patient and will continue to look. If you decide to sell yours early, drop me a line, please.

Will do.

And if I see a reasonably priced Stick out there soon, I'll forward it to you.

It would be nice to have a list of where all the Sticks are?
According to Emmett's post, my 1978 Stick was the 304th one made.

BSharp
Stick Enterprises, Inc.
Post Re: How Many Sticks ARE There?
Time to chime with a rhyme sublime.

1974 - Started the first six with serial number 101, which I still have. Why not 001? Someone told me we'd look bigger starting in the hundreds (Stick Enterprises Inc. and all).

1989 - Reached 2772 in consecutive serial numbers, then went to Finland and came back inspired by the first adjustable truss rods to start over with 001.

July 2002 - Combined both sets of serial numbers, adding them together (minus the missing first 100) to show the real total of Sticks in the world. The serial numbers immediately jumped to 4794 (from 2121).

October 2013 - Now up to the 6400s. Railboards are included in the sequence but NS/Sticks are not, instead being numbered by a backwards version of the setup date. If you put the year first, then the month and then the day, the numbers move only forward in time tho not sequentially. (Works for purchase orders too.)

Thanks for that. I never knew when the numbering system "combined". I thought it was around 2000-01.

A further complication in that calculation is that (so I believe) numbers get assigned when the blank is machined into Stick/Railboard shape & that is done in batches, so Sticks/Railboards don't necessarily leave SE in serial number sequence order.
