Post subject:  People who traded their sticks in from overseas!

I've often thought about trading in my 10 string for a railboard, a grand or an SG-12.
I know that sticks hold their value and that if i sold it, a new stick would really only set me back a little more. But with shipping and new taxes, how expensive might it be?

When I bought my stick in roughly november 2008, the aus dollar was around $0.70 US, like it is right now, and buying the case and with taxes it ended up being about 5-6 thousand AUS.

Does anyone have any experience in this area?
I live in australia if that helps.

It's an interesting idea. Would you only have to pay taxes on the difference if you traded it in? If so it might be worth the shipping costs. On the other hand, you'd be able to sell it for a decent price most likely.

The reason I considered sending it back to SE is because I thought there might be the possibility of technically buying the New stick for whatever the difference was.
Eg. Selling my stick here for $2000 and then having to buy a stick from SE for $2500, i'd get taxed on the full amount of the $2500.
But if I sold I traded it in to SE they might just charge me $500, and I'd get taxed on that (We get taxed i think 10% on purchases over $1000 AUS from overseas).
Prices are just rough examples.

I can't remember what shipping ended up costing me the first time, I was only 16.

Also I just realised I posted this in the NS forum, is there any way to move my thread?

Hi Kalyptic,

It all depends on how the sender describes the value of the goods being sent, and on the Australian customs evaluation of them. I don't suppose SE would describe a Stick at $500 USD when it retails for $2k+?

You'll have to pay shipping both ways, although Emmett offers a discount. You're still looking at $400 of total shipping for the round trip?

The duty into Australia is more than 10% unfortunately. Here's a thread that estimates the AU duty on a recent Stick:
