Post Fretless - "Wolfy" Low B
Seemed there was a bit of a mechanical rattle on the ancient Low-B string I put on my half-fretless when I first got it. Now that I've put new strings on, I'm getting a really nasty buzz from the new B, everywhere on the fretboard.

Raising the string on the nut side, and cranking it up as high as it can go on the bridge side doesn't seem to alleviate the problem.

I do have the action pretty darned flat and low overall, but I remember having a similar problem on my fretted NS. Changing the B-string (twice) eventually fixed the problem, if I'm remembering correctly...which makes me wonder if I didn't install it correctly (again) on this instrument. Maybe I cranked the string-retainer too tight and damaged the string?

This might be a stupid question, but did you adjust the truss rod?

This happened to me once. The String was damaged. I had cut it ( shortened it) before installing it, thus damaging it. Greg suggested it could be that problem. So I installed a new lowest string and cut the exceeding bit AFTER. No buzz anymore.

Thanks Olivier!

So, I must be a little ham-fisted when I'm installing these strings. I do cut them *after* tightening the retaining screws, however, I do have a tendency to wrench on the retaining screws pretty tight--maybe I'm actually breaking an interior winding when I do that?

Should I be doing something special when I bend/pull the larger strings over the nut and through the retaining hole?

Have a gig in a week--wondering if I can get a replacement from SE in time or if I should try and find a temp. replacement at a local shop. :(

It looks logical to me. I always did it this way...cutting after intalling it. Never experienced a string cut before installing. I guess it's more logical because the big strings are twisted.

I may have jumped the gun...my friendly guitar store guy suggested I be a little more patient with the setup..so I took some more time, and I was actually able to tame the rattle this time around.

How do you adjust the truss rod?

If you do it visually you need to do it on the melody side. There is a slight bow in the bass side.
