Post NS String Set- Heavy or Medium Gauge?
I see that Emmett recommends the heavier set, but I'm interested in other opinions? Any advantages/disadvantages to one or the other? I'm about to close a deal on my first NS and I'm very excited! I'll be tuning in straight 4ths. Thanks much...

I didn't know there were different gauges for NS/Stick strings. I know you can

My strings say Medium/Heavy Gauge. That was all they used to have listed.

I'm going to shoot an email to Gary and see what he says.

Yeah, that's the impression I was under as well. I thought that because of the scale length, there was only one set that would cover that range. The NS that I'm buying is in Crafty tuning now, so I thought I'd check before I ordered the new strings. Much appreciated Dean...

Gary got back to me and confirmed that the Heavy Gauge is the one they were selling before. (Medium/Heavy Gauge)

Gary hasn't played around with the medium gauge yet so he doesn't have an opinion about it. But it will be a lower tension.

I would stick with Heavy Gauge. I have no issues with it and really like the sound... but that is me.

Medium gauge should have a lighter tension than heavy gauge. Just clarifying as it sounded like you were saying the opposite.

Yup! You are correct...

I don't know where my head was on that one...

Thanks for the correction... I will edit it on my post...

So now I'm wondering if tighter tension is better because the action is so low, and with less tension there may be more opportunity for string buzz? I don't ever remember an issue with my Stick or Alto Stick, but this is a different beast.

I appreciate everyone's insight here, thanks.

I imagine that you would need a custom set of strings if your new instrument is tuned in Crafty Tuning; a much lighter set.

Agreed, I'll be ordering a straight 4ths set soon. I have the NS in hand, it's spectacular. Thanks Nick!

Kris

P.S. If anyone has an opportunity to deal with Nick "Klaus", he's a class guy. This is the second transaction we've had and both were great.
