Post Launched! NS/Stick Youtube Channel!!
Hi Everyone!

I've launched the NS/Stick Channel!! :o

The NS/Stick Channel will cover a variety of topics regarding the NS/Stick. My hope is to provide a perspective on the instrument from the point of view of the people who play it with tips, tricks, instruction, and interviews.

The first video is why I chose this instrument. I thought prospective players may be interested in understanding what made someone like myself want to pick up the instrument. In the future I hope to have some interviews with other NS/Stick players and ask them the same question.

Please send me any topic suggestions you may have. Next video will be about changing strings.
Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Noice.!

Looking forward to checking this out. If there was a matrix program for NS Stick I'd be onto to in a flash.

Good initiative, Dean! I don't have an NS but subscribed anyway. I'd love to get a half fretless NS at some point in the future.

I ll likely never get an ns stick but they are super cool. I keep trying to get my bass player friends to bite and get one. Your channel is super cool and I like what you are doing so I subscribed to it. A very worthy project. I'm sure there is lots of over lap. Looking forward to more.

Post Re: Launched! NS/Stick Youtube Channel!!
Thanks for the wonderful words of encouragement.

Just about a year ago I was thinking of writing a NS/Stick book. I even met with with Don Schiff to talk over the topics. I started outlining the book but I just couldn't come up with a way to convey what I wanted to say. I also don't read/write music but I thought I could learn Staff Tab™ and even had a brief conversation with Greg Howard at the Vancouver Seminar about it but this would have been a very painful process and it would take too long to create my goal of instructional material for the NS/Stick. (I probably should learn to read/write though...) It also popped into my head that if I do make a book and actually printed something I probably won't make enough money to recoup my expenses... There are only a few hundred NS/Sticks in the world... (I may still write something in the future... I may make something a little more concise than a bunch of youtube videos)

The idea of the YouTube channel hit me as a great platform since I can make videos on the fly. It's free to make and free to watch. I've been watching channels like "Produce like a pro" and it all just mades sense to me. I want to interject personal views with the technical and the video format works great for that. I'm not monetizing this... I even set up the channel so that there are no ads so you aren't bugged or distracted...

I'm having a lot of fun creating the videos. I have already made several and will release at a pace of two a week to get more content out there. So much I want to cover but it all takes time. I want to be consistent with coming out with videos and hopefully help people interested in the instrument or other players who just want to see what another player is doing with his instrument.

There is a lot of overlap with the "normal" Stick. (You guys are all normal!) I will reference others who have done the same or similar topics in the past the best I can. But I figure the perspective specifically from the NS/Stick would be of value to other NS/Stick players.

Anyway... I've rambled on too much...

I hope these videos will help other Stick and NS/Stick players.

Dean, I think your idea of a YouTube channel is an excellent medium to get your message out there and popularize the NS/Stick. I'm subscribing and watched the first episode. Great stuff!

I've long had questions about the NS/Stick and many of them were answered by your first video. My only concerns about it are that I'm now used to the fifths tuning and the lower bass strings in the middle of the fretboard. NS/Stick seems strung exactly like a regular 6-8-string bass. Which ironically is the attraction for a traditional bass player, but it's a detraction for someone used to the "regular" Stick.

I get you can tune it differently. If I had encountered the NS/Stick first, I might have gone with it and been very happy. Now I need to play around on one. Hopefully I can live vicariously through someone here in Michigan who's got one to demonstrate. Cheers and best of luck with the Channel!

Thanks Steve!

In the Stick family the NS/Stick is the least Stick-like. One of the most influential innovations of the Stick is the inverted tuning which the typical NS/Stick does not have. There are people who do the inverted tuning on the NS/Stick but it seems pretty rare and you can see those tuning suggestions on the SE website.
As mentioned in the video, I have a hard time conceptualizing the inverted fifth tuning and so I went the route with standard 4th tuning.

I can only speak from my perspective and I won't discount other's methods and experiences. I will try and mention those the best I can and encourage a broad understanding of the instrument.

Great to hear Dean.

A bit about Dean...
Dean has the unique distinction of being the first person to sign up for FHA 2014 and attended both the 2013 and 2014 sessions. He performed at our 2014 event as well as part of the Stick Nights at the Guitar Merchant with Don, Emmett and others. He was also a featured performer at our first ever NS Stick Night with Gary Jibilian, Don Schiff and the crazy talented Nathen Aswell.

He's been a guest on the FHF as well as leading sessions with other NS players. He also leads the NorCal Stick Circle, which has morphed into other musical forms, but still has the Stick at heart.

A true blue ambassador of the instrument! Dean, you know how I feel about the book. There is no better person qualified to write it. Until that time, I look forward to each session that you have to share - thanks so much.
