Post 3-Way Switch?
I recently ran into a routing snag while playing my NS. What I'm wondering is if it would be possible to replace the current pickup selector switch with a 3-way. Currently I have the option of running both the melody and bass sides out in stereo, or I can sum them from the bass (tip) side. What I would like to do is add the option of summing them both from the melody (ring) side as well. That way I can process the two sides independently, or process them both via either of the two summed paths out. I'm thinking that this won't cause any issues, but I'd love to hear other opinions.

I looked at several routing pedals, but couldn't find anything that had two inputs and the three output options that I mentioned. I know that I could use a mixer, but I'm looking to be able to make the switches on the fly.

Thoughts? Thanks...

Kris

Hi Kris,

I looked into this myself several months ago.

I talked with Gary Jibilian about sending the mono signal out the ring/melody side. This is a pretty simple modification if you are comfortable with soldering on a switch. I wanted this because there is an effect on my melody side chain that would work great when in Mono.

If you can find a switch that is small enough and has the right poles and throws then you can do it. The problem is finding a switch that is small enough to fit. I searched through many catalogs and websites and cannot find a switch that is small enough.

I was tempted to change my switch to go out the ring but then I wouldn't be able to use a standard guitar cable if I wanted to.... So I stayed with the standard configuration.

What I did isn't exactly what you want, but the wiring diagrams at the bottom of my article on the NS may help you. Although my web pages are gone now, they are still available via the "Way Back Machine"

Dean & Russell,

Thank you both for the advice.

Dean, couldn't you still use a guitar cable, as the ring just merges with the sleeve on a mono cable? Seems like it would work.

Russell, nifty mod changing the split and using a push/pull pot. I have confidence now that I can mod the switch to split the signal the way I'm wanting.

I've sourced the correct switch from DigiKey. I think I'm going to give this a shot. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm loving this instrument more every day!

What is your idea on how to do this?

I'm guessing that you will use a push/pull pot to flip the tip/ring?

I didn't think of using another switch... I was thinking to find a three way switch where the current mono/stereo switch is located.
What push/pull pot are you using? I think I may do the same thing.

If the signal is being sent to the ring the signal will be grounded on a regular guitar cable and so there will be no signal at the tip.

Let us know how it goes!

I spent a little time this weekend with a broadcast engineer friend of mine, and after taking a look at the NS wiring, he had some concerns about impedance trying to combine both sides to two sides of the switch. I think we've come up with an alternate plan, I'll be testing it out this week and will let you know what I find. If all goes well the options will still be to send both sides to either of two processing routes, or keep them in stereo and separate. Stand by...

I have been looking into this as a solution to this problem:

I've flipped past posts many times on the Stepabout, not really paying attention to what it is. This looks like a very good solution. Morley makes some good routing units, but as versatile as is. Thanks for the info...
