Hi Everyone,

What Gauge do you use and what is your experience?

I've only used the Heavy gauge. It was the only standard set being offered until recently. I'm curious to see what other people are using and why you use it.

Thanks, Dean, for asking about this. Meanwhile, I put in an email to Cambria at Stick Enterprises asking if Gary Jibilian or Emmett or someone with an expert opinion could give me some more insight into heavy versus medium on NS/Stick. And I'm Facebook friends with Don Schiff and Gary and you and other NS'ers--maybe I'll just call all of you out on Facebook and ask for some opinions, since not everyone lurks here in Stickland.

So this was Cambria's reply and the Gary she mentions is Gary Jibilian.

I spoke with Emmett and Gary. Gary said he has only used heavy gauge in all of the years he has been playing NS/Stick. This is our recommendation as well. In terms of the difference between the medium the heavy gauges, the heavy gauge will give you more of that bass guitar feel. The heavier the gauge of strings the tighter the tension.

I switched back to the heavy gauge on the order. I can always put on a different set later. So I guess that'll make me a heavy, too.

I could swear that Steve Balogh (MichNS) has medium on his, but maybe I'm completely wrong.

Nope, I use heavy. I believe I once got medium by accident, a bit light coming from a bass background. You never saw that setup.

Ah, thanks, Steve! So I don't know where I got mediums in my head. It makes sense that a more bass-like instrument would have the heavier strings. Rodrigo gave me a very nice explanation of why he prefers heavier gauges on his Railboards, versus the lighter gauges that some like (mainly, that he can dig in and feel them strings). I've known nothing but medium gauge on my Sticks. I'm sure I'll dig (pun intended) the heavies on the NS.
