Another one from the young Russian Stickist and tapper, Valery Rovinskii.

Bach - Air from suite N3 (BWV1068)

The description of the video calls it "Bach - Air from suite N3 (BWV1068) - NS/Stick," and this might be either his knockoff NS/Stick or his real one (we determined he has one of each or more, and also a 10-string Stick tuned in fourths that I'm writing about in another diary right now on tuning!), but it's still awesome either way!

Post Re: Solo NS/Stick Videos
Here is a new video of me playing Joe Satriani's "Always With Me, Always With You"...
I play okay until the very last run... ugh... Oh well... I wasn't going to do the whole video all over again... so I'm publishing it with all the mistakes in it's full glory!

I usually play along to a backing track but I figured I do a video without it... I did play along to a click track.

Had to adapt it a bit...
The tempo is a little slower.
The range is a bit limited on the NS/Stick so I had to play some parts an octave lower. Also some of the runs had to be shortened and simplified.
I had to simplify the part which Satriani plays with a two handed tapping technique (on the guitar) so that I could play it with one hand... it's a bit more melodic this way...

I hope you enjoy...

Wow! Dean, that was awesome! What a great song and great cover! I really love your tones on both bass and melody side as well.

So my new rule for all covers that I haven't seen in a while is to just enjoy the present one, before looking back at the original.

Now I've listened to Satriani since the early 90s, and then Vai, and then back and forth, and then on to other great guitar players and then back. Anything off Surfing with the Alien always takes me back.

But this particular song I recently saw him play at a Sweetwater event, for some amp (I don't remember which.) But he played the backing rhythm first with a clean sound, and then had it looping in the background, while he did his thing and soloed and noodled on top, with a click, a minor percussion track, and a few synth stringy lines way back in the mix.

So just adding that rhythm track would be a great idea, and it is exactly why I finally got the TC Ditto (stereo) to do that. I haven't got to it yet (just got a 9 volt plugin through Ebay) and then your song pops up and makes me remember that this kind of song is exactly why I wanted a looper.

Thanks so much for posting, Dean! I can't wait to hear more of yours!

Thanks Steve!

I've been going back and forth about covers... weather I should be a purist and play the original or be okay with adding my own stuff... I guess it depends on the song. A song like this, I tried to stay as close to the original as possible. The NS/Stick does have it's limitations and I had to change some things to make it work... but overall I tried to stay as close as possible. There is one section I play a different line and I liked it better than the original so I keep it... For a song like Steve Vai's "For the love of god" I play the melody lines it's famous for but there is just no way to play all those parts using the whammy bar and crazy stuff he does so I just improvise over the bass (super simple bass line... like just root whole notes...) and just lose myself in it...

I think I've seen that Joe Satriani video. I've seen several videos where he plays it that way.

I was thinking of doing a looper with this one but there is a whole section in the middle where it goes into a minor key... so it wouldn't work all the way through...
Another way I did play it was using a Sonuus G2M on the bass side and have it trigger a synth pad. I use some Midi utility plugins to play chords in the key and then hit a footswitch at the part I need the minor key. Real pretty but I didn't have enough CPU on the Duo to run the synth and all the other plugins I want... just clean NS/Stick with synth... it was really nice... (Don't tell anyone... but I now have two Duos... and I can go back and try this with all the plugins I want... )

Thanks for watching!
