Post NS/Stick, The UnBoxening
I have not been able to find an NS/Stick unboxing video. I knew that mine might be the only one that most people will ever see. So I tried to make it a good one but also kept the production and bells and whistles down to a minimum. (That's really just an excuse to not spend another week making clever transitions and title screens and instead spend that time on the new NS/Stick! I'm selfish like that!)

So I set up two cameras, and let it roll, and tried to walk through the unboxing without just tearing the damn box to shreds to get at the Stick. Geo the Cat made an appearance near the end and looks like the cutest kitty in the world (and sniffs the Stick approvingly. And licked it. Just sayin'.)

I tried some tapping, slapping, and strumming/fingerpicking. I suck at all of these techniques, but I'll get better! The bass line starting and ending the video is taken from my first noodle session with it during the video. I plugged a stereo signal straight to the studio speakers with all knobs on the NS at max, and no effects and no EQ. Nothing but NS/S and me, SS.

Here's what I put on Youtube:
Quote:
Chapman Stick makes an 8-string guitar-bass called an "NS/Stick" that can be tapped, strummed, and picked like a guitar or bass and plays like a Chapman Stick. Watch a new ebony-stained wenge-on-wenge NS/Stick called "Lord Vader" be delivered, UnBoxed, and played with. 69 days from order to door!

NS/Stick UnBoxening

Relevant info:
Ebony-stained wenge body with wenge neck, white pearl guitar dots, black strap with inner brown liner, 8 heavy-gauge strings tuned bass 4ths, serial number and date of manufacture of 170130. 69 days from order to door.

Steve,
Really great video!! and I really enjoyed the sound bites of the instrument as well. I am going to order one of these beasts very soon... . trying to decide on fretted or half fretted. Going to have it tuned in 5ths straight across , I think..... At any rate.... Looking forward to hearing more!!

Steve . Sweet video. I've been anxiously awaiting this. I'm so happy you got it. I hope I can try it out at Interlochen. That could be dangerous. Awesome video. Love the drum rolls as well. Look forward to seeing you play more.

Rob

I had a bunch more sound effects that I wanted to use, then I thought "What the hell, Steve, have you no shame?" And then I decided to use the drum rolls and angelic choir samples. And then I got lost for an hour playing Bill and Ted clips just to hear that guitar riff they use and then I had to use it. Then the Imperial Death March had to be used, and it better not get my video pulled at YouTube for an improper use of the sample! I was playing a ringtone on my phone while I recorded the video so I think that's fair use.

Ooh, a half-fretted would be awesome! I think Don Schiff has both and probably others. But which first? And then all fifths? I thought hard about that myself. I love the bass 5ths in the Stick but I also like the 4ths. As a keyboard player, both have been new to me. And then melody side is 4ths anyway, so why not all bass 4ths? And I absolutely love it so far. And it opens up the entire world of 5-string bass literature to me to learn from.

Best of luck whichever you decide on!

Shoot, Rob, what to bring to Interlochen? I have (different) 3 Sticks now! The Rosewood is light and functionally the same as the Railboard, so maybe it and the NS?

I plan to do some videos this weekend since I'm set up for the unboxing video. Hopefully post something soon! Thanks, Rob!

And then Geo jumped in the frame and had to lick things! But he's been in all my videos, and quite accidentally! He instinctively knows when I start recording and meows at the basement door, so I usually let him downstairs to preempt the meowness. And then he'll wander into frame and that's an unplanned bonus. Each and every time. :)

Thanks, guys! My daughter said to me when I showed my son the unboxing video: "You did an unboxing video on YouTube? That's like the lowest form of content!" :ugeek:

Yes, you're 14 and way more cool than I'll ever be, but people do like me on the internet! Thanks, guys!

Glad they shipped it to the correct Steve in SE Mich :) Outside of you, Jeff, and I, I believe there are two other guys that either have or sold NS Sticks in the Wayne, Oakland, Macomb area. Used to be one more when Gary lived in Ferndale.

After reading Mate Tate's FB post on picks, I've been buying up a variety of Dunlops and a few SD Brain's. No gathering at Oz's tomorrow night, but next time I'll bring the batch out for you to try.

I don't know how anyone has time to set up a camera when a Stick comes thru the door...
