Post New NS/Stick Channel Video - Gary Jibilian (Part 1) & part 2
Hi Everyone.
Here is a new video for the NS/Stick Channel.
I had the pleasure of talking with Gary Jibilian for the NS/Stick channel. We talked for quite a bit and I had to break it down into two videos.
This first video is about Gary's musical journey from playing drums, meeting the NS/Stick, to working at Stick Enterprises.
Sorry for the bad sound... I'm learning how to use this new camera and I mistakenly put it under a ceiling fan...

After watching that I remembered this pic below. Gary was the first Stick player I ever took a lesson from, back in 2006. I was not part of the National Stick seminar that happened here as i didn't have a regular Stick that year. But Gary agreed to give me a lesson in his old then ex-wife's home. I have to admit, meeting someone face to face for the first time in their ex-wife's home seemed a bit odd to me :o , but he assured me they were still friends 8-) . I didn't ask anymore about it, so this video completes the story, and a nice one at that. Thanks for doing this Dean :D .

This is what happens when you're a bit of a pack rat when it comes to emails :D

Back in the day, Yuta was very good and putting potential customers in touch with local people in their area. She was the one who introduced me to Steve Oz who was only about 20 miles from me. I thought she'd put Gary in touch with me but in the first email he sent me (now that I look at it), he saw a link to my website at stick.com.

Looking for a possible local connection, he pinged me and I still have the exchange archived. This was in June of 2000.

Quote:
My name is Gary Jibilian. I play bass full time for Thornetta Davis, and for Bobby Murray. Bobby has been Etta James' guitar player for the past 14 years. He's on the road alot, so he doesn't gig around town much.

I saw a link to your site while I was checking out the Stick web site. I've been interested in checking out a stick bass, but it's hard to find one around. I've been playing bass for 14 years and I'm pretty good at tapping, technically. I don't know much theory, just basic chord structures, a bunch of blues lines/shuffles.

He went on to talk a bit about his music tastes and asked if there was anywhere he could try out an instrument. At the time, I had never met Gary but I knew Thornetta Davis and knew that her band was quite good. At the time the NS was just coming out and his description of his own tastes and where he wanted to go just seemed to scream NS. So at that point I penned the following reply:

Quote:
Honestly, which instrument to get is a tough question. Generally, what the 10 and 12 string Sticks give you is a broader range and the ability to perform full solo pieces (assuming that's your ultimate goal). If your intent is to remain the low end guy in a group setting, the Stick bass might be just the ticket. Another thing you should consider is getting an NS/Stick. I played on one in L.A. last February and liked it a lot. It's tuned in 4ths (like a regular bass instead of 5ths like a Stick), has 8 strings, and allows for tapping, picking, finger picking, some slapping. And with the tuning being so similar to bass, you'd be able to start using it right away.

There was more but mostly the rest was just comparing notes on being performers in the Detroit area.

Of course, Gary did go for the NS and never looked back.

That is great!
Very interesting to see the beginnings of a person's journey.
Thanks for sharing Glenn!

Thanks for the interview Dean! It was fun reminiscing about the past, up to the current days with the NS/Stick, and working at SE since my move to LA in 2005.

Thanks for sharing the pic, Stephen, and to Glenn for the blast-from-the-past email!! Seems like it was just yesterday. :)

Just watched both videos - excellent. Fun to hear some deep tuning and finger position talk about the NS. I enjoyed hearing about Gary's gungho attitude about coming to LA.

31:50

Gary: You gotta try something new, like running down the street naked or something..
Dean: I do NOT want to see that (nodding head)
Gary: That will change things though
(Dean's expression is priceless)

WINNING! Also the bit about destroying an NS was great, solid gold. Dean Kobayashi, we are loving the NS Channel! Loved hearing all of Gary's backstory, good job.
