Don Schff - Rain Fall on Stick.com
I just want to point out that there's a new Mini Video of Don Schiff playing Rain Fall on the NS Stick on Stick.com. Personally I love the way Don transfered his traditional Stick parts to the NS Stick on this video. Sounds awesome.
You Rock Don!!!

Greg, as a person "chomping at the bit" to get my NS I definitely "study" the way Don plays the instrument, his technique, his approach, ... in the same way I study YOURS and a few others on the traditional Stick from the Stick Night 99 video and youtube videos. It's one thing to HEAR something on CD's however it takes on much more meaning when you're trying to understand and learn to actually SEE the technique and "magic" in action. I have great appreciation for you, Don and so many others for sharing your skill and advice freely to us in the Stick community and I know I speak for the majority when I say Thank you!!!

Hi Ray, Thanks so much for your kind words, and you're most welcome. I believe the "internet video age" will do for the Stick what live performance has always done for it, but on a larger scale - show people what a cool idea Emmett's method is, and enable the performer to share their their joy as a musician with the audience directly. Seeing it in action is definitely part of the experience. I love records, and the art and focus that goes into them is wonderful, but you're right, an audio-only medium doesn't capture the magic of Free Hands. Our challenge as recording artists is to focus on the music, and not use the fact of tapping as a substitute for good composition. Our challenge as performers is to concentrate on our intent in making the music, on what we are trying to say, not just on how we're saying it.

The MUSIC is what's important ... the instrument is just one of the tools used to create the music. HOWEVER when you're new on an instrument it takes a lot of work and time to reach that level where the instrument simply becomes an extension of the musician. On the Stick I have a LONNNNNNNNNNNNNNG ways to go to be even close to that level! I hope someday to get close however in the mean time the journey is a lot of fun!!! Thanks again Greg for your constant advice and inspiration.

Hi Ray, I'm really happy to have all these NS/Stick videos online, because it is such an unusual instrument. Dan's approach to filming them is nicely balanced on the player/instrument, and I think the best way to show an instrument isn't to bury it in effects, but to give a clear a picture as possible of the instrument's tone. I think you'll start seeing a lot more videos of the NS from other players coming soon, and I lok forward to seeing your own contributions to these down the line.

Re: Don Schff - Rain Fall on Stick.com
That's a great video of Don in true form. I like the more Sticky approach and was wondering what tuning he is using. Specifically if the tuning is other than "Guitar Intervals". Also I think that what Greag is saying about the video age is huge. As big a cultural definition as Rock or Hip-Hop. Thanks. jrj

I'd like to add my kudos to Don to all the others. I was so impressed in fact, that I've just placed my order today for a half-fretless NS/Stick although, to be honest, I was so blown away by Don's playing that I almost didn't dare place it. posting.php?mode=reply&f=7&t=159#Ed White NYC
