Amps & Effects
Ok, this is the big question: What is the preferred type of amp to use with the NS? I'm currently using 2 different rigs, both of which aren't getting me a great sound. I'm using a Hartke 3500 combo with a 15(non aluminum) and tweeter and when needed a Peavey Mark III head with an 18. I'm looking into the prospect of adding a 2x 10 but would likely put the Hartke head into a rack along with an EQ and the second part of the question.
Effects. I'm using a Zoom 506 bass effects pedal on the bass side and running Mono quite a bit with a Morely wah on the high side. If I'm going to go with the rack mount, what would be recommended for effects? I've looked into the X3 live for a multi-pedal but would like to keep it compact if I'm going to go rack.
Any help?

Re: Amps & Effects
We are not far off: The 15" you have probably isn't doing well with high frequencies. If you get a 2X10, make sure it has the high frequency horn. Stay away from the low end Hartke 2X10 "Transporter". I had one, and had to trade it in - it will cut the upper register right off on the NS. The cab you see on top was custom built for me by Don Oatman of Low Down Sound in Ferndale, Michigan. It has an adjustable tweeter. Whatever you buy, check the frequency ratings and bear in mind the actual performance in bass cabs tend to run a few kHz lower. My 3500 has a SOVTEK tube in it, which gave it a better sound than the Chinese one that blew out some 10+years ago. The 3500 should work fine for your NS, unless you want something like Euphonic Audio or some of the newer amps showing up with higher frequency responses.

Re: Amps & Effects
Well Bill I don't have my NS yet however I find I get my best sound with my Stick, basses and guitars running straight through my Mackie sound system with BassPodXT and FloorPod Plus processing units. SRM 450 tops and a SWA 1501 sub woofer going through a Mackie sound board. Granted this is a front end sound system and more expensive than most bass or guitar amps however a SMALL Mackie sound board with one SRM 450 top and one SWA 1501 sub would be an amazing amp setup for ANY instrument. We're talking probably $1,500.00 to $2000.00 but an SVT amp and cab goes for the same or more$$. And there have been threads about the ohms of a sound board being too low for a passive Stick however the NS Stick has active electronics so that doesn't matter. ........... And honestly ... regardless of OHMS my Stick with Stickup pickup kicks ass through my system.
So that's my recommendation. Mackie SRM450 top (one should do) placed on top of a Mackie SWA1501 sub and a Mackie 6 channel sound board. a totally killer AMP for ANY instrument for under $2000 ........ Oh and the nice thing is no external power amps ...
If you don't want to start from scratch I agree with adding some 10's or even a bank of 8's to your current rig. Actually if you could find one of those old BOSE tops with (I think) twelve 5's that would work too.
Let us know what you decide.

Re: Amps & Effects
Hey MichNS, I think your head is the same as mine. Yeah, the original tube is shot in mine, but I bought it that way.and I'm not sure it would be worth it to replace. I'm actually looking into a local guy custom building me a 2x10, but then I have to choose the speakers. Our NS look like twins as well.
88persuader, thanks for the info. I'm almost considering a keyboard amp that can push the full range of the NS and EQ it out as opposed to a regular bass amp, but it is an option and I'm not sure what to do with it. I'm considering shopping around a little bit, but out here in BFE, the music stores leave a lot to be desired with the selection, especially in power.
