Post Re: A different side of the NS/Stick
A bass player freind of mine was asking about 'fretless' Sticks last night when I demo'ed my 12 String, so I sent him the link to this. He was absolutly floored! This video awnsered all his questions and more.
Great playing and a hell of a groove....thanks for posting it.
I'm also a big fan of that bungee rack lol

Cheers,
Eric

Hey Don, pretty cool! love your bass tone. just recently made Ironwood #1212 (Sylvia) fretless and DBR. it's pretty loopy. and im playing it w/out a damper. you're right about the hands just intuitively damping the strings - plus harmonics all over the place. i know the NS/Stick is a totally different animal, i gotta go back to my Grand after a little while on the fretless - playin in tune (double and triple stops) tuckers me out. but im diggin it...

MARTY!

Please share a picture of this "Sylvia" with us. Is it set up so just the bass is fretless or the whole Stick  ?

Post Re: A different side of the NS/Stick
when i figure out how to set up my own page on this computer and get someone w a camera ill send one out. it's totally fretless looks the same binding in the fret spaces. another post tells of the conversion. both Sticks are DBR now - 1/2 step down. med. gauge. Emmett was a little concerned when i requested DBR strings for the Ironwood (intonation) i modified the bridge pieces. takes some getting used to (!!!???) but im having a blast. and i have Blondie to resort to (12string Grand) when i get frustrated. i missed fretless so much i finally said WTF. guess i killed the resale value...

Post Re: A different side of the NS/Stick
The fretless tone on my NS is in general a little compression mainly. In this particular video I used a "Chris Lord Algea" VST plug in. For the bass side that added compression, a tad of chorus/stereo spreading. I push the compression to give it growl.

The top side, same plug in but dial it for guitar effects, and in this case reverb, delay and slight compression.

The strings were a fresh set so very ringing. I fell in love with the tone as well and that was the first recording I did with that NS. Many recordings for myself and others have followed and the formula generally the same. The tone is all there I just push or pull on it with compression. It is also gorgeous with a touch of distortion! Very warm and yet commanding.

Thanks for listening and asking.
Don
