Post NS/Stick changes since first ones?
What has changed on the NS/Stick since the first ones were made?

I believe there was a change to the bridge but I don't know what changed. Were rails always used or were frets or rods used? Was the neck always laminated? I think you could get a graphite neck. What else changed?

Those are the kinds of things I was interested in. I know the changes that have been made to The Stick over time, but I never closely followed the NS changes.

Hi Russel,

All of the new features on the instruments, including the NS/Stick are listed on this page:

http://www.stick.com/history/timeline/

As far as I know, it's up to date.

Mine is one of the first, I purchased it in 2004. Didn't realize what I had until I found this forum and NS Sticks were in short supply until the graphite ones came out in 2006.

See for yourself, bass guitar frets, Wenge neck.

Here is a picture of the first two prototypes.
Don Schiff has the lighter color one and I own the other one. We call them the sisters...
The body is slightly different. Pickup location is a little different. There is a hold in the butt end with the idea of putting a cello/bass end pin (I'm thinking of getting one to try it out). The bridge doesn't symmetrically fan out. The strap bar is parallel to the neck. Neck is not bevelled. No Retractable dampener. (I'm sure I'm missing something...)
The last three things (strap bar, beveling, dampener) were updated on my NS.

Good information. Thanks! The time line page is very good in general, but these details listed in the last 2 posts are the kind I was interested in. Anyone got more?

There was one before....

The very first NS/Stick prototype had a 36"-scale neck, 3 pickups, and a cello peg...

not sure who has that one....

I've not seen one, but I've heard of some like mine with the rounded corners on the body unlike Skydiver's had no beveling on the backside of the neck. Gary Jibilian had one identical to mine. Someone asked if I had sent it back to Emmett to have it beveled. But that was the way I bought it. Unfortunately I'm not sure of the history of mine - there were two NS-Sticks at Oz's Music where I bought it. I believe mine was the one bought directly from Stick, the other was used. I never saw the other, it was sold before I got mine. Gary bought his in 2000, mine has literature printed in 2001. The serial # is 40309.

When I "bought" my NS, it was not really for sale in 2004. I placed an order with Yuta, and she told me if I can buy Steve Osburn's, grab it fast because they were doing a changeover. I made Steve's wife an offer, and two weeks later they agreed to sell it to me, and I cancelled the order. Afterwards I found this forum around 2005 and learned many people were anxious about buying one, but it appeared none were made until the graphite necked ones arrived in 2006. So if I remember right, no one bought anything from late 2004 to early 2006.

Someone posted that only around 300 were built before 2006. I don't know if that's accurate, but I was surprised to find out how rare the instrument was. I remember the article in Bassplayer Magazine about it, and Steinberger basses were easily found everywhere back then. Felt pretty lucky buying one "over the counter".

I remember now...
I was talking to Emmett at FHA2013 and he was telling me about another one with some ideas he had about the cello peg or some kind of Emmett invention. He made some kind of slide out foot so that the instrument doesn't rotate when you play.

36" scale with 3 pickups would be a monster!
I want it...

What I love about the stick is that we are witnessing the evolution of the instrument. Relative to most other instruments it's in the infant stages. At FHA you can see the evolution of the instrument and the creator in the same room.
It's creationism and evolution in the same space! :o
