I found Don's playing on that Neo-Metal piece so interesting that it got me to wonder about a completely fretless NS/Stick (although I'd lean towards having it lined). Just curious.....

I remember reading on stickiest.com someone taking out the frets in their stick. I haven't seen any video or audio on it though...

I think a fretless melody side would be very hard to play. Maybe do solos and singe notes. I wonder if you can do chords very well on it...
Here is a video on the fretless guitar.

Nice find, Dean. That guy can really get down on that fretless guitar! I love the rock feel, but with all the fretless expression. To your point, chordal work seems like it would be very difficult...

...unless you're Fatih Ahiskali:

Ahh... those Vigiers are awesome! I love fretless and tried for two years to buy a Vigier but they never answered my emails. So when I found out that Tim Donahue in Japan manufactures equally good fretless guitars, that also offer six additional harp strings, I gave up on the Vigier and bought this Donahue instead:

im the nutjob that had the frets removed from my Ironwood. it has white binding in the fret spaces but it's actually throwing me off-what i hear is different from what i see. so i might darken the binding next string change. it's tuned DBR and i play double and triple stops with not too much problem. who am i kidding, it's a lot of f*****g work playing this bitch in tune. i mean, it takes alot out of your hands-especially the left. and i sound like "bad Jaco". but it IS fun. check out Dave Fiuczynski of Screaming Headless Torsos. he makes it look (and sound) easy.(plays fretless guitar and microtonal) sent me over the edge to actually have the job done. and yes, i have a Stick that still has frets...

Hi Marty - I would love to see pictures and some video clips of you playing it.

ooh, a Glissentar! I used to have one, but I sold it to a friend, who puts it to much better use than I ever did.
I often use a Grand Stick with the three lowest strings fretless, but the rest is fretted. I tried a half fretless stick once, but the sound of the higher bass strings didn't convince me, that's what led me to order a 1/4 fretless.
I guess that would be the issue I would have with a fully fretless Stick as well: the thin strings tend to sound dull and with very little sustain, which I also experienced with the nylon-strung Gissentar (the lowest strings were amazing though!).

That's what I too have experienced with my four fretless guitars. Three of them I did build myself by ripping off frets, filling up the scores and planing the neck. But you soon hit a certain level where a de-fretted guitar just can't level up further as fretless and you realise that it needs a genuine fretless neck, expesially built for that purpose. The neck should be fat and massive and the fingerboard hard; Vigier uses metal! My Dohahue uses ebony. D-I-Y guides at http://unfretted.com/ talks about super hard boat finish as a good fingerboard treatment. Much of the cool fretless tone happens by the string slapping agains the fingerboard, at the point where you press it down. One might say that the fingerboard finish of a fretless neck is as important for the general sound as the design of frets/rails/rods is in fretted instruments.
