Video was being recorded at the stick set up seminar. Not sure if it's going to be something available any time soon.

Do you have some specific questions on set up?
Gary is very approachable and I am happy to answer any questions as well... not that I know much... ;)

Thanks Dean. A few weeks ago Gary suggested I raise the nut saddles on my B, E,and A strings because they were buzzing. A quarter turn solved the problem. I've been away for about 3 weeks, and now the other strings are fretting out between frets 1-3. Just not sure whether I should raise the nut saddles on those strings or do a truss adjustment, which will be my first.

Go with the truss. It's most likely the issue with the change in temperature and/or humidity. Probably just loosen it by 1/16th to 1/8th turn will probably fix it.

You may want to consider putting the BEA strings back down and adjusting the truss. It's possible that the symptom shows on those strings before others get affected. If not, you know how to fix it.

Keep note of all the changes you make so that you can reverse it if things get worse...

One thing that I learned at Free Hands was that the thick string side of the NS (the top side) of the neck has a slight bowing in it. This is normal.
The melody side should be straight.

A while back I was looking down the neck and saw the bow in the bass side and I tightened the truss until it was straight... but then the melody side was curved out... Then none of the strings played... :o

Then I went back and adjusted it by touch and loosened it until it played right.

Something I have learned is that the instrument is set up super well at SE. If you bought the instrument from SE or sent it in for servicing then you can bet that the instrument is set up as close to perfect as possible when shipped out. (they are human so there is a possibility of errors but very unlikely) If the instrument doesn't play well when it reaches you it's probably the truss...

Thanks Dean for all your advice. I'll do the truss adjustment.

Time spent in airline cargo bays could mess with the instrument a bit, too. I remember Gary saying that when you adjust the truss on an NS or a Stick, you would be better served making the adjustments abruptly, with sharp turns of the wrench. No fear of having to be gentle like you have to with guitars and basses.

I loosened the truss a quarter turn and all is better. Dean, Luc, thanks. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to give a private concert for all the cockroaches and waterbugs, in the storage room of our apartment. We must all start somewhere.

Glad it all worked out!

I love this quote! It captures the experience of so many of us. Keep entertaining those bugs and some day, sooner than you think, you'll be playing for people, too. I'm shocked that I'm now capable of standing in front of a crowd of people and playing for them without dying, feinting, or freezing. As to actually entertaining them? Well, I'm still working on that. 8-)

One step at a time.
