Post NS Video: Ongoing project of mine Update 10/11/08

Updated 10/11/08. New version posted.

Learning this tune took some work, as I had to locate a CD & an accurate transcription to the whole song. ( There are many innacurate transcriptions out there, the tune is in the key of Ab, most are in C, among other issues) A lot of people post their own versions on YouTube, but Chris Crain's was one of my favorites. I really haven't seen anyone play the whole song, Chris was pretty close. Some things I found had to be improvised or cut out as some of Vince Gauraldi's piano style isn't easy to duplicate on the NS. Still, it's agreat tune to learn two-handed tapping as well as using conventional bass techniques you can do on an NS.

I've played this for Steve Osburn who I've been taking lessons from, I needed to slow it down some to make it more of a jazz style.

Way to go, bro! That's some good independence you have going there. I've been meaning to learn this song; it always struck me as a great exercise for rhythmic independence. Was that "mighty mouse" you were playing through? Keep the vids comin'. - Matt

Thanks!

"Mighty Mouse" was used to aid my M-Audio monitors to get the drum sounds into the camera Mic. I had both the LDS & Hartke cab going through that Hartke head. Even at low volumes the Hartke setup out-gunned the M-Audios. If I turned up the M-Audios, the sound was way too bright.

If you want to learn the whole tune, the best transcription available is "The Vince Guaraldi Collection". There's a music store inside a local mall near where I work that has tons of sheet music & music books. The guy that runs it is a piano player, and showed me something like 5 books but indicated this one was the closest. Everything else is pretty much in the key of C and has none of the other two solo spots transcribed. On a normal Stick, the bassline takes some serious hand shifting, on the NS I only really have to reach out the pinky in the same position, and only do one hand shift to change bass chords.

I used to play this on my bass by alternating bassline and melody. It's a big hit with people anywhere you play it. Perform that one at a wedding and I guarantee people will ask you to play it more than once.

Hi Mich,
I see 135 views for your video and no one has stood up to tell you something. OK, I'll be the asswipe. First, I like yer playing. Clean and sweet.
Now the bad news. I'm only doing this for your own good ;) . You are nowhere near playing in time with the drum track. It's a serious problem that you maybe oughtta deal with before it gets worse. It sounds as if you couldn't hear the drums when you were laying down the Stick?? When you listen do you not hear that??
I'm thinking that if I were to hear just the Stick track it would sound very good. You need to get in time with the drums and I'm hopin' someone here can make some suggestions on how to do that.
Anyone??

Yes, thanks!

Steve Osburn who I'm taking regular Stick lessons with told me I'm just playing too fast. True, I am having a rough time hearing the drum tracks, as I tried to get the "stereo field" centered on the mic. I have them coming out of the loop station into my Fishman loudbox and two BX5A M-Audio monitors. Probably best I just run them out of the Fishman pointed straight at me. I may just try running everything through it. Unfortunately my Hartke needs repairs as the power switch has died.

Now that I have the tune memorized fairly well, I'm going to try playing with the CD a few more times to correct the speed. Hopefully that will get me in sync with the drums.

Thanks for stepping forward.

Will do! This is an excellent tune to learn on the NS. I just tweaked the drum levels in the RC-50 to my Loudbox and saved them. As I stated, an ongoing project, I even have Steve Osburn continually thinking of ways to play it better.

I've reshot & posted this tune (link above). Since the original posting, I've ditched my bass amp and replaced it with the AI CODA-R which amazingly is much louder than what it replaced. Now I can just run everything into both that and the Fishman Loudbox in stereo.

Still needs some improvement, being a tune I've heard my whole life played on a piano, this song is fun, but adapting everything to a different instrument and playing it myself I've found to be an interesting challenge. Plus I'm playing the whole tune, most people posting videos of this only do the normal portion you hear in a Peanuts cartoon. The other two solos not often heard is where piano translations require some creativity.

I used a Sansamp Bass DI to even out the NS tone. I really like the sound of the NS through the CODA. The Fishman adds something to the high end that the CODA lacks, but on it's own, the CODA beats all the other bass amps & PA's I've tried running it through. The dealer I bought the CODA from recommended the LR Bagg's Acoustic DI which worked well for both the NS and the bass he had there, I might consider swapping the Sansamp for that one, but I still have a lot of experimenting to do, as the Sansamp has more features in it. What intrigued me about the LR Bagg's is it adds way more depth to bass without sacrificing the high end.
