Post HELP! decide between bass 4ths and guitar interval
I just placed my order for an NS stick last week. 8-) I asked for bass 4ths tuning but I'm a guitar player and I'm thinking I should change to guitar interval which makes the highest 6 strings the same as guitar.

I know playing leads and melody lines (with the left hand)will be more familiar with the guitar interval tuning but what about chords with the right hand?

Any thoughts or suggestions? :?: i guess I should just mess around with some tapping right hand chords shapes on my guitar changing between the higher and lower pitched strings.

Thanks.

I played with an haïtian guitar player last Januray and he was tuning his regular guitar in 4th's all the way. The guy is good, really good. I guess the human being is learning everything. It's just an adaptation. The main point is what you play in the low range is played the same way in the high range...same geometry. You don't have to learn different positions in each range...it's huge.

I'd recommend straight 4ths for consistency.

Don't worry about changing your order as the strings are the same for Standard Bass 4ths or the Guitar Intervals tuning. I'd imagine the intonation changes between the tunings would be so small as to not be a concern.

Post Re: HELP! decide between bass 4ths and guitar interval
I've been playing in straight 4th from the beginning but I was a bass player before NS/Stick... so I prefer the 4th tuning vs the guitar tuning.
For me I started with playing bass lines with my left hand (bass side) and chords with the right hand (melody side). The shapes of the chords are the same wherever you place your hands and, for me, very logical.

However... I did play with Gary Jibilian's stick back in August. Don Schiff and I got a lesson from him regarding the guitar tuning and see the benefits of it. There are certain arpeggios that he plays where the fingers line up perfectly for the fingers.
BUT... Gary didn't consciously choose this tuning... he got his NS that way and thought that was the way they are supposed to be tuned. So he just moved forward with playing and writing songs with it that way.

I have another friend who is a total guitar player and started playing some NS and stayed with 4th tuning. He did show me how when he's playing in the "box" for soloing he has to adjust one fret at the bottom because there isn't that guitar interval... but he quickly adapted and now shreds on the NS.

This is the problem with the Stick... There is no "standard" and you keep thinking about "what if"...
This is also the wonderful thing about the stick.

My suggestion is to just start with what seems to be the "standard" (for NS that is 4th tuning) and get "proficient" in it. Then explore other tunings if you feel there is a need or get that bug to explore.
When I start thinking about "what if" scenarios without being proficient in something, I don't progress. I'm not creating anything and just exploring.
When I limit myself, I'm more creative because I have to dig inside me instead of searching outside for something that may, or may not, be out there.

I got sidetracked there... (did you know sidetrack is one word... I always thought it was two words...) there I go again...

Well said Alain, Russell and Dean. Emmett frequently changes his tuning, it keeps you on your toes.

My suggestion would be to Make the initial commitment on your own and see how this works. Meeting up with another NS player would be ideal as that's a great way to learn a lot in a short period of time. If that's not an option, check out some videos or get some Skype time with many of the qualified players here.

Congratulations on your order. NS Sticks are very hard to put down!

I agree with this. In the end, it's a half-step difference. You can stick with the fourths tuning and detune the top two strings to try both ways, see which one you like more.

I think that's what I'll do.... as you it said, will be a simple matter to detune the top two strings down a half step and try it both ways...So I'll just keep the order in straight 4ths.

Thanks very much to everyone for all the helpful comments. :)

I'm embarrassed to say, and I guess I should have originally mentioned, I've owned several 10 string Sticks over the years (one for sale on E-bay right now... shameless plug  ) and although I've tried several different tunings, I've never been able to bond with the reverse 5ths.

I've tried several variations of matched reciprocal, reverse 4ths on the bass side, classic tuning and just about everything you can think of... I CAN make music with the 10 string but when I tried a stick bass, that's when I felt most comfortable....I know some of you will say it's just a matter of practice time with the 10 string but.... then I started reading about the NS and the fact that you could not only tap, but pluck and strum and I've always loved the headless design (Owned a steinberger for years) so here we are... NS on order....

Oh and on the rig?....I got a chuckle out of that comment... I have G.A.S. worse than anyone!... I already have several "rigs"... I have so much gear it's not even funny... especially to my wife
