Post Re: HELP! decide between bass 4ths and guitar interval
Hi Glenn,

Very interesting!
I've come from the 4th tuning (bass) and wondered if anyone has come from the reverse 5th tuning. I had to go through the scenario in my mind and see if it's something that I would want to pursue.
Don Schiff started on the "traditional" Stick but he still has both and I've never talked to him about it. When he started on Stick the NS wasn't even a concept yet... but he looks like he is more "at home" with the NS.

Very interesting...

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Dean....

Yea, I envy guys like Don who can switch between different instrument tunings like that. His video's helped me decide to order the NS......

In one of his videos he talks about playing the cello which is of course tuned in 5ths

Have you watched that 20 min long Rocket Scientists video?

Don's video where he plays all the different styles is what inspired me to take the plunge.
I saw that 20minute Rocket Scientists video too. What a trip...

Post Re: HELP! decide between bass 4ths and guitar interval
I learned to play bass as a teenager, so the 4ths tuning was ingrained in my brain from an early age. By now I've played Stick long enough that 5ths in the bass have been learned fairly well.

When I got a my NS/Stick a few months ago it was super easy to go back to the 4ths tuning. Only a few times did I play something "backwards" thinking in 5ths. I thought that was a good sign as to how my studying and practicing helped get 5ths in my brain. In the end, what I learned in my youth (4ths) came back very easily. It actually felt like a long lost friend.

I think it was in Rob Martino's Free Hands Friday were he also commented on the familiarity of 4ths and that is why he tunes the bass side of his Stick in 4ths.

I'm not saying 4ths are better than 5ths, just relaying my experience.

After sort of playing a 10 string for a while (matched reciprocal) I came to the conclusion that ....

Left and right hand poly chords = 5ths bass, 4ths melody (MR)

Walking bass and or bass accompaniment left hand, right hand = melody/chords = all 4ths tuning.....

This of course after much reading and watching many videos...
including Rob Martino and Don...

Well, for solo play I preach the guitar tuning. I hate to say it but there are just some shapes and dope things that fall under the hand well. I like the wildcard feel on the top 4 strings too, as if I can play jazz better (in my own head). 8-) I can't beleive that I am going against the nice geometry of all 4ths. Luckily its actually so easy to switch between the two ts all good. I like playing the same things sometimes in all 4ths that I wrote in the guitar tuning because it sounds super dissonant. Thats just cause I abuse bar chords and open strings. Hell, the all 4ths is ace 2, maybe it makes me play more dissonantly?.The Guitar tuning just has got some sick chords while using comfy hand positions, and lends itself well to the more horizontal neck/seated style I use on NS. This is my choice for "hybrid" NS playing, with strum, tap and all other techniques. If you only tap I'd rage all 4ths more I think.

I think the intonation is fine if you switch between the 2, or at least close. I hope so cause I habe doing that ha, Hails
