Post Bridge Mute?
Any tips for an easy-to-remove-easy-to-replicate-positioning Bridge Mute?
On Bass, I used to use foam but over the years I have developed better results muting with my palm.

Palm muting on the NS gives me the tone I like (just on the low strings) but of course that ties up my right hand.

Tomorrow I plan to try the old tried and true Pipe cleaners or yarn...maybe rubber bands or bicycle inner tube? There isn't as much space to work with as on my PBass.

You could always use the Bob Culbertson method:

Funny....I use Gaff tape on drums all the time but have never used it as a string mute!
Thanks

Excellent suggestion, Robstafarian!! When I want my stick to sound more like an gut stringed African instrument, this is what I do.... How is the new Stick, by the way? hope you are well!

From time to time I use a cut-up kitchen sponge to mute the bridge on my bass guitar. It gave me a great Jamerson-like tone, even with roundwound strings. I think Donald "Duck" Dunn did the same thing as well. I'm guessing if you slice-and-dice a kitchen sponge to fit your specifications, you might be pretty damned successful!

Let me know if it works! I have a NS/stick too, so I'd love to know

Best,
~Nick "Klaus" G.

Hey, was that Olivier running sound in the background?

Great video. I have used duck tape in the same way, even before I ever saw Bob do it. Needless to say, it didn't sound as good as when he does it.

The best solution I came up with today was a strip of wool cut off of an old sweater.
You can double it up or roll it to get the proper amount of tension from under the strings.

Just dampening the top of the strings doesn't give me the 'thump' I am after.

I'm going to try to make one using heavy duty velcro and maybe a tin strip of wood or rubber (using the fuzzy velcro as the mute).

As recommended in Chapter 9 of The Stick Book: electrical tape.
There are always a couple piece of electrical tape stuck to my rack that I can pull off at a moments notice and stick to the strings for muting.

Of course, I was also shooting with the moving camera, while a fixed camera on a tripod recorded the whole thing. Bob spent one week at our place during the Buskers Festival in Neuchâtel and I had the pleasure to be his personal street manager, sound engineer, video crew, translator and jack of all trades. Needless to say we had one hell of a blast :D
