Hello,

I've had my NS for 6 months now. I'm hoping someone can answer this question.....

I'd like to raise the total pitch range of the instrument by eliminating the low B string, shift all strings down one position, and add a high string in the first position.

I'm playing in the guitar interval tuning so I would need a high "D" string?, (a C# in open tuning?) Is that correct?...

Is there a high string available that could be tuned to C# for this purpose?

Hi Glenn,

Your highest note would be a D. If you put the major 3rd in the "normal spot" between the 2nd and 4rd strings, this would be the tuning.

1. D
2. A
3. F
4. C
5. G
6. D
7. A
8. E

That's the highest you can go on an NS. Is your high string now an A?

Yes, my high string is currently an A. ..so I need to order a D string... I see thats available for the 12 string stick... would that be the one?
...also according to the ns tuning chart, the strings/pitches you listed are the first tapping note... open string would be a half step lower, correct?

Glenn,

The NS tuning charts reference the open string not the first playable fret. In that way they are different from the other tuning charts:

I'd suggest a .009 or an .008 for that string

Also, make note of the bridge and nut settings for string height and intonation and copy them to the new positions appropriately, changing the lowest bass string first and then moving across..

The new high string will need to have a shorter scale, and the height will need to come down just a touch.

Ned's side-saddle bridge and nut screws are amazing for this.

let us know how it works out for you. I've often thought that this should be a standard option for the NS tunings...

It would be great to hear how this turns out.
At one point I experimented with just the bass side and made it EADG just like a regular bass guitar. When I first started playing the NS I was missing the G string on bass side. I eventually went back because I wanted the low notes and I was able to work around the limitations.

Recently I have been copying guitar parts/solos and I wish I have one higher and one lower string on the melody side. But I worked through it on just four strings.

It's fun to experiment and see where your music and taste lies best in the frequencies the NS has to offer. Having these "limitations" keeps me thinking of creative ways to problem solving.

Looking forward to the results of your experiment!

Well I finally got around to attempting to make the string position shift this evening and I ran into two issues... First. there really isn't enough slack (extra length) left on the original strings to move them to the next lower position. Where the setscrew clamps onto the string on the nut, it's squashed/flattened, so I tried to move the string just a little bit further into the nut opening beyond that point and there just wasn't enough length leftover. No big deal, I'm going to have to order a new set of strings to make this change.... they're over 6 months old anyway..

Secondly.... when I removed the original low "B" string and started to move the strings over, I then noticed the different size ball ends vs the size of the opening in the bridge saddle... whoops!.... looks like i also need two of the "smaller" ball end saddles to make this change correctly.... see the attached photo..... On the phone to SE on Monday morning...

Hi Glenn

Sorry but I hadn't considered the ball end. I think you only need one, though
, as the 7th string will fit in the current 8th string block. Correct ?
