Post Tap Theory - Finger Pathways
Hey everyone, it's a beautiful day in MA today. I hope you're all getting similar weather, along with the chance to get outside and enjoy it. When you come back in, check out this week's Tap Theory! This week I have a video discussing finger pathways, or which fingers play which notes. This is a very important topic in my opinion, especially for instruments that play notes with both hands. As always, there are exercises and much more at http://www.patreon.com/jgoldbergmusic. Enjoy!

Thanks Josh
I've been trying to work on pathways myself a lot recently, I too often end up getting my fingers in a position that resembles the board game Twister! Know it? If not, google, you'll see what I mean! This has been really useful.

A side note....Is there any chance you could please post a picture and describe the lap thing you use. I have been looking to get/make something that helps me play seating. I don't see the need to drop $100+ on the lapdawg, I built the 'DBroholder' but I have a Railboard and it was too heavy for it, and a drum stick holds it up but it keeps falling towards my chest. Your thing, whilst very DIY (love it!) seems to hold the Stick up so you don't need to hold it away from your chest.
Cheers buddy.

Paul

Cool video, Josh. A fun watch, for sure! I like your 'quadrant' ideas, I do the same thing basically, I just call it "position", but then again I'm not a real Stick player so whatever, right? Still I like that naming convention, so consider it stolen, friend!

It's interesting how one guy screams "hand movement, HAND MOVEMENT GODDAMMIT!!!" and only 3 fingers, whereas others will use all 4 fingers and zip around with hardly any movement at all, (screaming how important it is to use ALL of the damn fingers...) but they all sound great despite the differences in playing... A lot of different approaches to tapping out there it would seem.

On guitar I suppose it's like, picking for instance... Yngwie Malmsteen, Frank Gambale, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and Mike Stern all have a tremendously different technique, but they all sound awesome...

Anyways, really cool videos, man. Keep on posting them, and I'll keep on watching them.

Use all the fingers, thumbs included, both sides of the board, move, play in position, crossed, uncrossed, above, below...I got short stubby fingers. My left hand plays like an upright bass, my right hand floats and stabs. Unless of course I'm doing something else. I have used my nose on the 12th string...

So do you use both nostrils to articulate your notes, or just one and nose movement? Hahaha
