Post Aches and Pains? Trey Gunn plays with instrument on his lap?
Trey Gunn plays with instrument on his lap?I read this a while ago, and it has had me thinking that I should look after myself, but really once the Stick is set up and ready to go it's pretty painless to play for the most part... Plus I messed around with playing the Stick on my lap, and it was umm, not great hahaha Doable I suppose, but not for me...

Anyways, anyone experiencing the effects of long term Stick playing, or is this possibly an issue that goes hand in hand with the type of instrument (Warr, etc)?

Just curious if anyone's got any aches and pains that might force 'em to go a different route...?

Trey plays both ways, and playing the Warr on one's lap is much different than doing it on the Stick, due to set up and the body on the Warr.

I can get around with a Stick on my lap, but it's re-inventing a wheel. Emmett's method of one arm around each side of the instrument played (mostly) vertically is still genius and probably not to be replaced. Yeah, you CAN play a guitar upside down and backwards and on your lap, and with only 3 strings, and every other variant that people stumble into, or arise out of physical limitations like blindness (Jeff Healey), or products of autodidacts--people who taught themselves. As one such myself, I know I have several non-standard ways of playing piano, that still work for me, but would not have happened if I had had a better teacher than myself alone at night on old church pianos.

A lot of old blues players, to include Eddie VH, played in unique ways, because that's what they learned and have stuck with it because it works for them.

But to the topic, I hear Trey goes both ways still, standing up and sitting down.

Well, I’m less interested in discussing Trey and Stick vs Warr thanI am about finding out about folks with any long term injuries from tapping... Just curious, ‘cause I practice and play a lot!

I am a master sloucher. Of the instruments I like to play, it's the acoustic piano that is most likely to make my back hurt simply because ... as I said ... I am a master sloucher. Guitar on a strap is slightly better but still not a picnic. Acoustic guitar is much better for me just because I always play sitting with the instrument on my lap. I find the Stick forces me to stand/sit up straight just because of the way it lays and also because that offers the easiest access to notes that are up close to the nut. So with that, I have rarely, if ever, experienced any back pain playing the Stick.

As far as Trey w/ the Warr yeah he hurts from that beast. The price you pay. As far as my personal adventures with the Stick, I have a bad back, wear a weight belt@ work and around the house even to wash dishes. So, I incorporate every playing position - I sit, I stand, with a stand and my own interface ala Taggert, I sit w/ interface, I stand w/ belthook and strap, w/ modified strap...currently liking my interface because I can move around the studio and access other instruments and twirl knobs w/out having to "disassemble" myself from Stick. It sucks gettin' old...

My neck gets sore from looking down if I practice too long, and my lower back can get sore too if I haven't been stretching properly after the gym and I slouch in my practice too much. I'll usually just take 15 to 20 for a nice stretch.

Sometimes for my neck, I'll just practice with my head upright and my eyes closed and work on my proprioception in relation to the instrument.

Lately I've been having trouble with my left arm, causing numbness in my hand. Because the left arm plays lower notes, it tends to be flexed more at the elbow. I also notice unless I focus on keeping my elbow up, my wrist seems to flex more than it does on the right.
Both elbow and wrist flexion can exacerbate compression of the ulnar and median nerve's. So, having read Paigan0's post on playing horizontal from a while back, I decided to try it. It's a bit early to tell, but so far so good...

Hmmn, interesting stuff guys. Thanks for sharing! (And yes, Trey is a beast, I am a big fan of his playing, it's great) I am going to just have to pay attention I guess; so far so good. hehehe I find a problem and deal with it. My biggest issue was playing seated, belthook and lapdawg placement. I've since resolved it I think, and am practicing all kinds of hours. No back pain, but I am in pretty good shape despite my advanced years...

I have a friend who has a Warr, but I have never played it - The same as he has never played a Stick, (We just jam) I am thinking that the two are quite different...
