Neil S wrote: Tension will increase with scale length not reduce so would be running at a higher tension on a 36" scale. As you already know, Gibsons and Fenders have differing scale lengths, but are tuned the same at the nut. The 36 vs 34 inch sticks have different lengths of strings, but are tuned differently at the nut. Each fret from one on up the neck has the same scale length, but where the 34 inch has its nut, the 36 has its x-fret, with a nut further beyond that. You end up with similar string tension on both instruments, and the same scale measurements on the frets, but a longer "string travel", if you will, on the 36. As for these strings, I've never tried them, but I'm reminded that I do need new strings. Maybe I'll order some of both as an experiment myself. Dave

Re: NewTone Strings
That makes perfect sense to me. I'd be curious to know what a 'Custom Set' of hand wound strings would cost? Afterall, this is the manufacturer and they can make string sets for virtually any instrument. http://www.newtonestrings.com/ch6234 wrote: The 36 vs 34 inch sticks have different lengths of strings, but are tuned differently at the nut. That is definitely the salient difference, since Emmett specs all his strings from D'Addario. When comparing different string types, however, the differences in construction (e.g. alloy and wind) also affect the resulting tension significantly.

Re: NewTone Strings
I'm about to order a set. Did you go for round core and nickel plated steel?

Re: NewTone Strings
Ok, Neil from Newtone just told me that they offer hex core and nickel plated to match the originals.

Re: NewTone Strings
Alright, so I ordered a new custom tapping set fro DBR directly from NewTone and I am IMPRESSED by the quality and craftmanship. The packaging is like I've never seen before, vacuum sealed, ziplock to keep the strings dry, and labeled with the specific gauges. Attachment: DBR-package.jpg Moreover, the strings are also labeled so you don't mix them up. Made to the exact length of my 34" stick, with the proper taper before the bridge and after the nut. Attachment: DBR-strings.jpg Right now, I've strung my SB8 but I will post more pictures once I'm done with the setup.
