Post Tuners
what do you use to tune your stick? Does it show octaves? Is it useable on other instruments, like acoustic guitar, etc?
And why do you like it?
Inexpensive definitely a plus, but if the best is not, ahh well!
Thank you

Not inexpensive, but the Peterson Strobo Stomp HD is a super bit of kit - and yes it does provide an option to show the octave.

The only thing is it’s annoying with a dual mono instrument like the stick , no ? So while the clip on ones are not as nice , you don’t have an issue with dealing with two channels

Ah, well, it's that's no longer an issue for me as since I extended my 'melody side' across the 'gap' I've taken to playing mono... ;)

There are at least a few Stickists who play mono with classic tunings, e.g. Nathen Aswell (https://www.nathenaswell.com/).

Depending on the kit on a pedal board there are probably ways of combining two dry feeds in to the Peterson? Before going mono I used to mainly use the tuner in my Helix Lite (set to strob mode). That monitors both channels, but sadly doen't show octaves.

The MOD Duo-X tuner does show octaves, and can handle two inputs but only one at a time (a button press is needed to switch channels - as well as several presses to get into the tuner in the first place).

Post Re: Tuners
A great practical question.

A clip will do. Most any Snark will get you within 90% of what you need. This alleviates the need for a 2-channel tuner, which is absurd, but what Chapman Stick players require. Know your battery type and buy them five at a time. Leave one in your glove box and one in your gig bag.

I have a Peterson Stroboclip which has stays with me, even if I have pedal solution for tuning. I use this for all kinds of guitars, basses, mandolins and Chapman Sticks. A clip-on doesn't mute though...

If you were using a small mixer that had an effects send, you could use this to great effect in that both sides of the instrument could access a mono tuner via the send. Adding a 2-channel mute at the end of the chain allows one to mute and tune both sides in a performance setting.

For those using the TRS Output on their SP-2 Preamp, you can take the mono out from here to your tuner. The only snag here is that you need a 2-channel mute that is downstream of the preamp. This is for free. The tuner stays on the whole time allowing me to check my tuning at performance time. I may have picked this up from Rod Serrao.

The Source Audio EQ2 supports dual signal processing and has a built in Mute / Tuner - alas, it can work on one channel at a time.

With my single box Stompmix-4 setup, I am back to the Petersen as I can mute both sides from the Stompmix-4.

The Petersen Stroboclip is my musical Patronus lol. I keep my eyes on it like I keep my eyes on my coffee.

There's a fun FHF vid on tuners for Chapman Sticks up on YT somewhere.

.

start a thread and tell us of this Stompmix-4 of which you speak.

I've been liking your videos (and Mr Keith's latest...does it ever suck to have 2 first names?) not in terms or gear=more toys.
Kind of the opposite...getting the sounds/features you want in a clean, streamlined fashion -- dehasscularization if you will

Post Re: Tuners
I have a a Peterson HD
I really like it

caveat though, I use it for all kinds of stuff like servicing

Probably like many here though, my first exposure was to actual physical strobe tuners (Conn, etc) so the interface is familiar..I was the second worst clarinet student ever!!!
I do pref the strobe though b/c like beat frequency it lets one know how in tune someone is (my family plays different instruments that aren't always in equal temp, so I'm down the rabbit hole on how in tune, in-tune really is) but even beyond that...I mean anyone ever play a 12 string guitar and really nail the tuning...and then decide to detune a little to get a wider chorus?

I have a little shark guy (shark? snark ? whatever that amazon special is) around here...I'll see if I can find it. I remember it getting ya there in terms of practice and whatnot (maybe more, dunno - it ain't broke though) and I think it was on sale for the price of a beer

I guess I would say though that Peterson I trust
(oh, and remember, if your pickup has a mono switch, you can always hit that to tune...just remember which side you put the tuner on)

wow - how's that for useless?
