Post Stick® Tech Workshop and Concert: Charlottesville, March 27
Preliminary announcement
Stick Tech Workshop and Concert - Charlottesville, Virginia
March 27 at The Sound Studios

Hi Everyone,

I'll be teaching a one-day Stick Tech workshop at a local recording studio/performance space on Saturday, March 27, from 10-5 (with a short lunch break)

We'll be focusing on

recording techniques
amplification and signal processing and
instrument setup, all specific to The Stick.

This is not a playing technique workshop, so if you don't have an instrument already and want to attend, that's fine too.

The workshop will be followed by a concert at 8:00 with special guest opener Rob Martino.

I'll be performing in a variety of solo duo and ensemble settings, and there may be some other special guest Stick performers, too.

More details, including registration info, will be posted on the studio's website soon. The fee for the workshop will be $100 (attendees will get free admission to the concert, too), concert only admission is $10.

Save the date!

Is anyone else thinking of going to this? I am considering heading out for it myself. I was at the 2005 event in Charlottesville and it was great (even if it was the scene of one of my more memorable gear meltdowns).

I still have the writeup posted at:

if you do any recording, any posting to YouTube, fiddle around with Garageband, or some interface with your laptop, or remotely think that someone in the audience is holding up a cell phone at your live performance (OK I think I have everybody in the room now! :D ),
YOU SHOULD GO TO THIS!!!
This is a great seminar with a hands on approach to "taming" the wild Stick (tm) transients and very excellent advice on frequency masking, especially with the kick drum.

plus you get 1 on 1 with Greg on truss adjustment and your rig.
here's a post from the seminar, [ed. note- 2005, wow Glenn has it been that long? I was using Zoom pedals at the time]

"Dave Brosky setup and plugged in. With some very noticeable noise problems, Greg proceeded to tweak and re-arrange in such a way that Dave's overall sound was noticeably cleaner with the very same equipment he walked in with. "-Glenn Poorman

what makes this a clincher, is the line up for the evening concert. Darrell Rose is incredible percussionist and very entertaining to watch. check out Greg's Live At Millers posts, James McLaughlin is a amazing drummer, and John D'Earth is a long time collaborator of Greg's and who appears on the Sol Album. That is worth the ticket alone! You are going to learn a lot, and hear some great music, plus see how the Stick fits in with different musical styles.
So what are you waiting for, reach for that PayPal right now before it fills up!

Thanks Dave and Glenn and Bruno for the enthusiasm.

I'll have a bunch of different kinds of amps there for people to play through, so I hope it will be really instructive.

Looking forward to hearing Rob play again.

Where else can you go on a Saturday night to hear Stick, clay flutes and berimbau, Tull covers, and maybe some Mozart?

Hope to see you there....

The concert's getting some nice publicity, so it should be well-attended:

There's still space left for the workshop. It will be small, so expect lots of personal attention to your questions.

Put me on the wait list. I don't want to take a spot from a Stick player but if there are extra spots I'd like to watch and absorb recording techniques.

Hi Rich,

Like I said, it will be a small group (just a few signed up, but it will not be cancelled even with only a few). If you want to sign up, please do.

I now have 4 Sticks, all set up in different tunings:

Grand Stick: Classic with high bass 4th
Ten String Grand: Dual Bass Reciprocal
SG12: Classic SG12 with high bass 4th
10-string 36"scale Stick in mystery tuning (what is mystery tuning #4 you might ask... 8-)) .

You can do some exploration if you like.
