NS damper
I've no doubt this has been asked before however the old data is gone so time to rebuild it! Can half the damper be engaged? Example the melody strings dampened for tapping but the bass strings open for regular Finger style bass playing.

Yes, sort of... there are two springs underneath the damper, so you could engage just one side or the other. I don't recall if this does an even 4/4 split though...

I haven't experimented enough with it yet to know if I get close to an even split. I have kept the same nut height as it came with. I'll have to play with it some more, but I get 3 or 4 dampened and one partially. I don't have much of a use for it but I see where the open notes could be useful on the bass side.

You could try to disengage it completely, then stick a piece of similar material under half just in front or just over the damper to damper half the strings.
