I suggested that for an optional addition to new Sticks. Fiddling with rubber bands, pipe cleansers and steel wires work well in the recording studio but when on stage you might have just five seconds to set up your Stick to sound like a marimba for the next song ) I'm picking "marimba" here just as an example because the convenience of right hand palm muting in guitar playing is what I miss the most when playing my Sticks. A mechanical sordin, like you put it, would be very useful for live Stick players and extend the use of the instrument quite a lot.

I've gotten out of the habit of it lately, but I used to keep strips of electrical tape stuck to my rack, I could pull them off quickly while playing, press them down at the bridge for a quick mute and take them off quickly when I didn't want the effect any more. See Chapter 9 of The Stick Book, for more about this. Larry Tuttle, Bob and several other players I've seen have developed the practice of muting the strings by tapping directly on the frets. It takes a little getting used to, and you have to be pretty precise, but it's a great sound as well. Al of these muted sounds are amazing with the PASV-4's bridge pickup and out-of-phase position, especially incombination with vibrato (for a nice koto sound) Happy preparing.....

greg wrote: keep strips of electrical tape stuck to my rack That's a great advice, Greg! Will try it ASAP Quote: Larry Tuttle, Bob and several other players I've seen have developed the practice of muting the strings by tapping directly on the frets Good trick in the safety of the recording studio but I'm not sure I would be very successful doing it live with my West African band where people jump on stage all over the place to hide money in the singer's clothes (Guineean custom) Quote: Al of these muted sounds are amazing with the PASV-4's bridge pickup and out-of-phase Indeed! I just got a great "muted bells percussion" sound from the PASV4 dual in-phase position by applying Emmet's advice regarding rubber bands between neck and pickups.

Re: Prepared Stick for new exciting sounds
Tapping directly on the fret wire gives you a decent muted tone, but I don't think it chokes the strings nearly as much as bridge muting. It's much more staccato and punchy at the bridge, imho.

Emmett, we treated speakers quite horribly in the 80's.

Re: Prepared Stick for new exciting sounds
Sounds like something off of the "Punch Drunk Love" soundtrack. Very cool and inspirational for a song intro or interlude of some sort.
