Re: AUTOHTONICA live solo on CDbaby (mp3)
There it is! I've been waiting for this CD, Boris' debut Stick (with small "gusli" harp) album. I search for universal music (not the mishmash labeled World music") and therefore I'm drawn to the individual ethnic "musics of the world", as I call them.
Now we have a fast fingered Stick player who is also a scholar in ethnomusicology, specializing in ancient Asian music, root of Russian folk music and of all things, Native American music and chants. You hear it all on this "Autohtonica" CD. (Why this techno name, I wonder?)
Of his 15 songs for downloading, my favorites are #9 "Starukha-Verukha" and #13 "Svjatogor". I've heard the latter original song once before, a different version, on a Russian broadcast video of Boris' vocals - temperate chords taking outrageous turns.
A series of rich musical landscapes performed live by one man with expanded hearing and agile fingering, all done on a graphite Stick fused to an ancient black harp (the gusli), all the while chanting like a Central Asian, reminiscent of the Native American.
His intricate yet funky Stick rhythms and cross chordal currents take it all beyond, and toward that universal music that I always must explore.
So when will the "physical CD" arrive? We need to stock up on some. Also, a colorful DVD must surely follow. I'd take it myself to Moscow's Ministry of Culture and Education (if there is such a department).
Congratulations Boris - an explosion of original talent. All the Best, Emmett.

Boris...! You're the first thing I heard when I woke up today and that's just how things should be, yes?! Like Coltrane said, he hoped his music would be something that anyone could play in the morning to give their day a lift. I just love the raw creativity of what you do, like you're walking a beautiful tightrope between chaos and new creative forms. The progression of ideas and a development of your wild abstraction in to cells of recognised themes is breathtaking, humorous and Genius. If I may echo Emmett's wonderful letter, Quote: temperate chords taking outrageous turns.
I know that myself and many others aspire to this and that the Stick seems to be made for it. Congratulations and Thank You..!

Re: AUTOHTONICA live solo on CDbaby (mp3)
Dear Emmett! Many thanks for wide review and congratulations!
I’m sure now – The Stick have more possibilities them any bass, trad or touch- guitars and, in certain cases (for ex. live play with midi), traditional black and white clavir sz’s keyboard in polyphony, harmony, rhythm and orchestration in improvisation genres!
I have no English and Russian words to express my deepest gratitude to You for Your super fantastic musical instrument !! That is real Music Universe!!
“Autohtonica” is ancient greek term similar latinos - “Ab origine” and English – “Indigenous”. Without “c” in the middle of a different analogue “Autochtonic”.
Physical CD will be as soon as they (CDBaby Team) will received 5 master CD-R’s from Moscow. I promise to send good print exemplars to Woodland Hills very fast as well. First demo received Tony Levin on his concert during Russia tour by StickMen one month ago =) And big large bottle of cossack cognac ))). For friendship))))))
Radkon, Thank to You for congrats and warm words as well!

Boris, I have to agree totally. Your CD is really fantastic. Like Emmett did change the musical world with the Stick you change the Stick world with your kind of approaching the instrument with your very own style in playing it. Great! Oliver

Re: AUTOHTONICA live solo on CDbaby (mp3)
Thanks Boris, for your excellent words about The Stick as a design and as a playing method on strings. And yes, I like to explore the musical universe too. In that sense, the instrument is like a sextant. Great labors in the manufacture and great rewards in the exploration.
Improvised music is like a language but what kind of language? It seems more akin to the personality than the spoken word. We can't help but "broadcast" our personalities all the time, "speaking" on two wavelengths. So what kind of beast is the musician artist on stage? If your musical style is a compulsion, I say it's real. If it's eclectic, well, that's another kind of reality.
BTW, your explanation of "Autohtonica" is astounding! Now I know the Latin origin of "ab origine" (origins of origins) as well as the Greek source of your album title. Good to know that you deeply identify yourself and your music with ancient Asian cultures.
Looking forward to your CDs. Best, Emmett.
