I remember, back in the mid-80s, at a Tucson street fair, a black Stick player playing through a Fender Twin Reverb equipped with JBLs. Lord have mercy! That guy just filled up the street with music. Sadly, I never caught his name.

Bump to hear more from your experiences. I'm on the market to change my SR Technology amp which is on repair :( , and I'm considering going into a whole Fender rig, for the bass side (I tried a Rumble 300 which sounds fantastic on the bass side) and a Blues Junior on the melody side.
Hi Bruno,

The amp is very lightweight for a tube amp. Many of the guitar amps I tried didn't have the kind of high end clarity I like to hear in my melody sound. Not having a tweeter places the sound "inside" the bass-side sound, which for me is a combination of "bass parts" and chord accompaniment.

Alex Nahas gets a great bass sound from one of those old flip-top Ampeg amps, you should check those out, too.

That is a good looking amp, Greg. And what do you like for your bass side these days?
I'm still really happy with the sound of my SWR SM-400 through the Bag End 15" with a coax tweeter. But since I'm not using the preamp in the SWR (I'm using the StepABout) it would be nice to find a kick-ass powered speaker with really good bass response to lighten the load.

Greg, Have you ever tried out a Mesa Walk About ? Excellent tube preamp . Weighs 46 pounds . All the power and low end I need.

Thanks for that feedback, I should try one of these. But with this kind of rig, you don't use anymore the capabilities of the routing section of the StepABout, right? Do you think that amp could occasionally handle the low end from the bass strings without distorting?
Oh, man, GAS strikes again to purchase some good old amp now

I will likely make the move to one of those this spring just to make my rig more portable. This decision was based in no small part on a recommendation from both Steve and Greg.

Hi Bruno,

It's definitely something to be careful of. I tend to route the melody through the bass side effects more than the other way around, but for higher pitched pads it should be okay.

My problem will be resisting the urge to get a 2nd Fender amp so that I can have stereo ambient effects (thinking about how amazing the SE-70 rotary will sound through two of these, for instance, or the Eventide delay pedal).

I think you need to try some of this:

Had a great practice yesterday, playing both sides of my Grand Stick through the amp at low volume.

The very bottom of the frequency range for the bass strings is definitely not there much, though with the amp on the floor, it's much better.

Overall a very nice sound, with just the right amount of clarity to get the fret attack I'm used to.
