Brian Blade..... one of the least self conscious 'jazz' drummers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNaQub7Gru0

particularly towards the end of the video

Its kind of funny , he arguably does a whole heap of stuff that could be in the "funny" drummer thread and yet rather than being comical it comes across as emotive and exspressive. I think that the reason that some of the other videos are funny is that the intensity and quality of the music doesnt quiet match the artist performance. I at least get the impression that he transcends technique and loses himself in the performance.

Brian Blade is indeed a very talented musician. I bought a cery nice cd called Mama Rosa which is a collection of songs and on which he's playing guitar and singing (no drumming here).
A friend on FB just posted that jam video of a french drummer who is beconming quite famous within the jazz scene here, Damien Schmitt (he's playing in the Alain Caron trio I guess). Quite impressing (but not really my cup of tea) :

Thought I'd switch the focus to newer drummers. I love Zach Hill from Hella. An absolute monster, that guy. The stuff he did with Omar from The Mars Volta is pretty slammin', too. I think the album is called "Cryptomnesia".

BB is an amazing jazz artist so in the tradition of the masters yet takin it somewhere else.

If I had to put it downy to 3 drummers that have most influenced me in jazz it would be Elvin Jones, Tony Williams & Jack DeJohnette.

Hella seem to have the kind of creative courage that you would normally associate with the jazz greats.

Here's Zach Hill again with Carson McWhirter, who played Warr Guitar in the band Ent. The thing I love about this is that it has the feel of an improv, but is in fact entirely composed.

Sick.

This one has only 17, and is now engaged with the progressive black metal band from Norway, Borknagar. He plays as his life would end soon.

The best drummer i've seen playing is Moritz Mueller from Germany.
I saw him play together with Steve in January 2010 during the stick seminar and saw him play with his own band 'The Intersphere' a couple of weeks later in Amsterdam.

Moritz doing some crazy stick (pun intended) gymnastics :

Boy, I didn't expect to see Bobby Jarzombek mentioned in a Stick forum! He's awesome...haven't heard much of him outside of Halford, but that was enough to convince me how good he is!
