Video comparison Stick pickups?
Has anyone ever created a video that shows how all of the different pickups sound? I know there are videos showing people playing using different pickups, but they aren't using the same effects and such, so it isn't the direct comparison I'm looking for. Any ideas?
Oh yeah and hi! Been a long time since I last bounced around on these boards.

+1 - I already ordered my Stick with a PASV-4, but I'd still be curious to hear the full range of pickup tones across the different models.

Re: Video comparison Stick pickups?
Around 2004 I made some comparison mp3's between the Stickup and the PASV-4 (with it's different PU settings). A couple of months ago I made myself a wooden pickup housing with 2 EMG FT pickups in it, so that's basically a home made copy of the ACTV-2 (it does sound very much like Bob Culbertson's Stick imdeed). I can record the same little piece of music that I recorded on the other pickups back in 2004 somewhere this week, so that you can have a listen to all 3 types. Mind you, the sound itself is one thing, but what you can't judge by listening to the mp3's is the reponse of the pickups to your playing dynamics. For me personally, the EMG pickups are the winners both in clarity and dynamics. I found the lower bass strings of the PASV-4 harder to control when using the Stick in a bassist role, where I dialed in some bass and dialed out some mids with an EQ. Besides that, the EMG's brightness reminds me a lot of acoustic guitar, which I really dig. To be continued! Regards, Jaap

At this point I don't own a Stick (lusting one for a long time tho), but I know my musical chops aren't there, so at least my wife hasn't yelled at me about blowing thru a huge chunk of money yet heh. Someday. Still, this would be a good bit of info for anyone looking at making that decision.

The pickup debate is always my favorite hehe. Here is a recent post on this same topic that was started by Cliff Marshall Van Buren to which Samson added some nice video: http://stickist.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5174

Jaap - Thanks for the MP3s! That's a great survey of the available tones. (And it makes me feel good about having gone with the PASV-4!)

Re: Video comparison Stick pickups?
Thanks very much for those Jaap. The PASV's Neck sound gets close to the ACTV's, but still not quite as bright. The PASV's bridge, the bass is a bit duller sounding, but the neck and both bring it out nicely. Even if the PASV's sound isn't quite as bright (as expected for a non-active pickup), there is an extra richness to the tone. The Stickup felt like it didn't do as good a job w/the bass notes to me. Almost like the sound has been covered in a damp cloth. I think I'm leaning toward the PASV from that round of mp3s. I'm sure the sound would change up some on a harder edged piece, but this is certainly one of the best cross sections I have heard so far.

Re: Video comparison Stick pickups?
Hi, You're right, the ACTV is definitely the brightest pickup. And the PASV is the most "electric" sounding, especially when switching all pickups on. Which module is best for someone is very much a matter of taste. You cannot simply EQ one of the modules and make it sound exactly like one of the others. Best advise: buy 3 Sticks Regards, Jaap
