NS/Stick Video
Hi, I posed this video in the showcase section but I thought I better share it in the Club NS section... http://getoutofthegarage.amplifiertv.com/channel/Dean+KobayashiAll parts are played on the NS except for drums. I created a loop and play over it. The drums were added later using Drummer in Logic Pro. (Also available in Garageband) It turned out pretty good! Let me know what you think.

Re: NS/Stick Video
I really like your playing on this. The longer, sustained notes are extremely expressive. Fantastic ... makes me want to pick up my NS/Stick again!

Thanks for the comments. k.graz wrote: I really like your playing on this. The longer, sustained notes are extremely expressive. Fantastic ... makes me want to pick up my NS/Stick again! I like the long sustained notes too. I sometimes just sit and play long sustained notes and get into a trans... Kataway wrote: A nice 7/4...like it...congrats. This was my first attempt at a 7 beats song. I tried to let it flow through the whole 7 count and not make it sound like 4+3 which sounds disjointed to me...

I'm thinking in the next few months I should have enough songs recorded to make an album or EP. The contest also forces me to make a decision on when the song is done. I can sit at the computer and keep tweaking and editing and re-structuring and adding and subtracting at the song. There is always something I can do differently but you have to make the decision at some point to let it go and move on. Another way to impose a deadline is to have concerts or showings of your song. I had an unfinished version of the new song completed for when I met with JRJ, G-Stone and others. These gatherings forces me to have something new and, at a minimum, semi-completed if not totally completed. I'm very excited at how quickly the last song came together. I have another song but it will probably take a little longer as I don't have a full structure for it yet. I think I will have it in a couple weeks. Thanks for watching!

Re: NS/Stick Video
Totally 100% agreed, which is why I harp on having a plan. If you don't know what it looks like (or sounds like) when you're done, you're thrashing.
Don't get me wrong, sometimes, a little thrashing is in order. When it comes time to record, having a solid idea of what it sounds like helps. I recall Tony Levin driving this home in our final day at the FHA. His processes are so refined to see, right down to the EQ of each side of his Stick.
The mix is NEVER done, so at some point, a deadline is the best possible motivator. Great to see you getting your music out there Dean, it sounds great!

Something that I inadvertently did and really helped me out is to record myself mono from my pedal board, listen to the recording, and tweak a few things and start again until I got the sound I am looking for for the song. I listened to the EQ of each part to make it all fit together. I have many things on my board (drum loops, bass side, melody side, and vocals). It's like mixing on my pedalboard. When I tracked each part I didn't have to do much to it to make it sound good because all the parts already sounded good together. I also know that when I go play live I will be giving the sound guy something that already sounds good. As long as the PA system sounds good in the room my song should sound good.

Re: NS/Stick Video
Hey Dean,
Sounds great! What gear are you using on the melody side?
Best, Markus

evil1603 wrote: Sounds great! What gear are you using on the melody side? Hi Markus, Thanks. I use the POD X3 for both sides. My melody signal chain is: Red Comp (based off the MXR Dyna Comp) - amp model "Mood" (a made up amp based on the memories of grunge guitar tone...) through a cab model called 4x12 78 Brit (modeled after a 78 Marshall cab with stock 70s...whatever that means...). That then goes through the model of the LA-2A compressor to an EQ to roll off anything below 50Hz. All that into a PingPong Delay and some Medium Hall reverb. I don't know if that answers any questions about my tone. I have no idea how close the models are to the real analog pedals. But it all works well for me... Dean
