Rootz! -- 3 Best
We all come from different places and we all have our rocks in the stream coming down from Stick Mountain , and I thought of asking people to describe the genre that they consider themselves (pop, rock/blues, classical, metal, jazz/blues, progressive-something, country, EDM, many others) but I can't even put myself into one genre (I fit in ALL the ones I just mentioned. ) Quote: "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes." - Walt Whitman
So instead, I can tell you where I came from, if not where I am at the moment! There are so many more influences, but if you pared it down to just 3 people (or bands, I'm not a monster), this would be the top. I already regret leaving many out, but here is the 3 that popped up first: My roots, my background, my 3 biggest influences: 1. Johann Sebastian Bach 2. Edward Van Halen 3. William Martin "Billy" Joel (Be as long or short as you like; no trees died for this post!) Who/What are your 3 most influential Rootz?

Ooo... Hard one...
I'll plump for theee most influential composers... and even that's a struggle.
1) Claude Debussy- definitely my favourite. 2) Stephen Sondheim- a modern genius 3) Frank Zappa- the most unique composer of the last 100 years.

Re: Rootz! -- 3 Best
That is a tough one. I'd love to be "that guy" that drops a bunch of obscure names so I sound cooler than I really am, but if we really want to get down to influence, the big three bands in my spongy teenage years were...
1) Rush 2) Zeppelin 3) Metallica
...however, the more I think about it, John Williams should probably be top of list. STAR WARS BABY!

STAR WARS BABY! Alan, I resisted that urge, too, to sound cool in front of you all--and went with what turned on a young Stevie Paigan. And I'm not going to pass judgment on anyone's choices--not even to say "Oh, I wish I had thought of him/her/them!" which I've done for every submission so far (just about.) But I totally forgot about John Williams! But that's the point--he didn't rise to the top three immediately. But keep'em coming!

R For a second, I thought your #2 choice was affirming someone else's #2, then I said "Oh, the band, Yes!" Then I Yes'd! your Yes. (Sorry--I said I wasn't going to cheerlead. Obviously I'm down with your #1 Bach as well. But I didn't say that! LOL) While I'm admitting I'm dumb, I had to google CSNY to get "Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young," and then said "D'oh! Of course!"

Re: Rootz! -- 3 Best
I suspect we'd see more and more overlap if we all went out to 10--great musicians are great!--but that's cheating, Brett! But I know how painful it was for you just to get to 10, so thank you for that awesome (but I'm not judging!) list.
That pain we're feeling--that's intentional! I had to force myself to really think about who "made" me. (But don't blame my influences! You can probably blame a teacher or two along the way, though!)
So many people's roots I'm curious about! Who's next: What's your 3 best influential roots, if you can pare it down that far?
