Prince--Multi-Instrumentalist Hero Icon--Dead at 57
Prince Rogers Nelson is my personal multi-instrumentalist hero. I saw him in an interview with Casey Jones, and Prince casually picked up something like 6 instruments laying around the studio--keyboards, guitars, basses, drums, and then a blistering saxophone solo--and just showed up some amazing chops on each one.
3:25 for blistering guitar solo:

Quote: Dearly beloved We are gathered here today To get through this thing called life
Electric word life It means forever and that's a mighty long time But I'm here to tell you
There's something else The after-world
A world of never ending happiness You can always see the sun, day or night
So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills You know the one, Dr. Everything'll Be Alright Instead of asking him how much of your time is left Ask him how much of your mind, baby
'Cause in this life Things are much harder than in the after world In this life You're on your own--- Prince, "Let's Go Crazy"

Michael Jackson, James Brown, and Prince on stage (1983 ) Quote: James Brown had a lot of famous friends in the audience when he played a concert in Los Angeles in 1983. First he called up Michael Jackson from the crowd, and then, at the two-minute mark in the video below, he called up Prince, who hopped on a guitar and upstaged two of history's biggest musical legends. Re: Prince--Multi-Instrumentalist Hero Icon--Dead at 57
I'm feeling real grief for the loss of a funky brother I never met.
For me and my musician friends, there was time in early to mid 80s when all we new was Prince and Larry Graham. It made perfect sense that they would play together.
I feel that Prince, having left us is saying, don't mourn me too much, just get on with making great music and infect everyone with it.

I blew out a pair of brand-new speakers listening to 1999 when it came out...the ROR's couldn't handle Prince's SONIC DENSITY

Re: Prince--Multi-Instrumentalist Hero Icon--Dead at 57
1st music cassette I ever bought was Prince's Purple Rain. 2nd was Genesis' Invisible Touch. Purple Rain was also the 2nd CD I ever bought, after Rush's Moving Pictures. This was an exceptional article with his recording engineer, Susan Rogers, on the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain. http://www.vibe.com/2014/06/purple-rain ... le-rain-2/Quote: Can you think of any other artist that has been that obsessed with recording at such a torrid pace? No. I can't think of any other artist who has ever done what he's done. His competition at that time was Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna. Now there have been other artists since that have seemingly done it all in the studio. But they don't really do it all. They are not writing, producing and arranging all of their material. And playing every instrument and writing music for movies at the same time and writing for other artists. Prince was doing all this and designing every aspect of his live show. He even designed his own clothes. To do all this and be on top for as long as he was and to have that many hit records and exercising that much control and power and that much anonymity over that many aspects of your music there's no precedent for that. Quote: What was a typical recording session with Prince like during the Purple Rain era? A typical session for Prince was when we started a song from scratch we typically didn't leave the studio until it was mixed and printed. No one else did that. But Prince did that for every song. So if we came in and we started a song from scratch we would either do the drum machine or live drums first. Then we might bring in members of his band. But usually he would finish an entire song without any help. We would not leave until everything was overdubbed. When I officially became Prince's engineer I would usually be mixing it as we went along. He changed his method of recording after Paisley Park was built because he could finally use automation. But most of the time I was with Prince it was very old school. My hero!
