Cliburn Amateur Piano Competition
Just thought I'd throw this out there. A pianist whose playing I am fortunate enough to hear and see on a regular basis (on occasion from 20 feet across the stage in the rhythm section at my church), Colleen Adent, is in the Cliburn this time around. She's advanced through the preliminary round of 72 (video embedded below) and is into the quarterfinal round of 30 musicians.
Fantastic musician, technically and artistically. She doesn't play Stick, but I take a lot away from seeing and hearing what she does across classical, show tunes, light rock, jazz, and worship genres. I'll be glued to cliburn.org for the live webcast of the competition; the quarterfinals are happening now (she plays at 8PM CST).
Along with her, there are some really high level players in this thing that are all great to watch and hear, so check it out.

Re: Cliburn Amateur Piano Competition
Wow! She is incredible! I have to say that these days I take a lot more direction from players of other instruments. I go in phases where I'm glued to the Stick guys and their technique but as far as general musicianship goes, there's this whole world of incredible performers out there and as musicians we've never been in a better position to hear them and draw from what they do. Van Cliburn performed every summer at Interlochen from 1961 through 1979 and was a trustee until 2004. He was a very big part of that institution during those years and, as a camper in the summers of 77-79, I was fortunate enough to see his last three regular performances there (he did perform there after that but not regularly). They put up a really nice tribute page to him when he passed away at http://www.interlochen.org/crescendo/remembering-van-cliburn-longtime-friend-interlochenThanks for that. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Wow, she's very talented! What a performance! Best of luck to her.
At that level of perfection, as opinionated as I am about piano and the playing of it, I can do nothing but marvel and delight. I would truly not wish to be a judge in that competition, but I'd love to be in the audience listening!

Really sounds like someone I wish I could have met, and seen perform. I'll have to see if any of his live performances are out there in youtube land. I don't suppose any of his infrequent visits in this century coincided with one of your Stick events? paigan0 wrote: I would truly not wish to be a judge in that competition, but I'd love to be in the audience listening! Yeah, you ain't kidding. By way of update, Colleen knocked it out of the park in her quarterfinals performance. Lots of that playing personality she possesses that draws the audience in. Beethoven, then Chopin, ending with Gottschalk. Apparently nobody has ever played something by Gottschalk (19th century American composer...who knew?) in the competition before. Fun piece starting at 14:20.
