Hi Jaye. I reckon you hit the nail on the head when you talked about playing something else and coming back to the stick, refreshed. I think many folk would agree, the stick can be a greedy beast and it's easy to get oneself tied up in knots over it. A bit like practicing muso's form of GAS. Anyhoo, mate, you make your obsessive nature work for you. High functioning addict....? xoxoxo

I did notice, however, that theory training with Steve + booze translates to adding cool notes to sheet music whilst playing piano. Lowered inhibitions leads to less strict construction on the sheet music and more substitutions, extra scale notes and so forth. Well, I haven't mastered anything, so I need to do some other things to help me along. I know a thing or two though, So despite not being a card carrying Stickist (membership declined...) I have made some progress on the instrument. Sometimes backwards... lol Learning keys is one of those things that helps, and I wish I had studied more keys; in particular Bach's two-part inventions. Anything by Art Tatum... or on guitar, fingerstyle stuff that uses a lot of Travis picking. It's okay, I can work on that now, and I do notice a direct benefit to my Stick playing. I already played/play drums well when I got my Sticks, and that was kind of helpful. My skills on guitar certainly don't hurt either, that's for sure but one definitely needs to treat them as different instruments. Actual real-time sightreading on the Stick is super helpful too, I found. Also, playing while singing is extremely helpful. Heck, if you can play something in time on ANY instrument and be able to have a conversation while doing so I think one might find that helps also. Also helpful; this is a challenging instrument to learn and play. If it wasn't, you would see a lot more guys playing this way... Ten fingers and 10-12 strings is a lot to get organized, find a context for, and get familiar with. It seemed like there were guys posting videos of playing that had only been playing for 3 days that were light years ahead of where I was at after months of toiling away. Lol That is going to happen sometimes. So yeah, keep in mind that this thing is a challenge... But at the same time, you don't HAVE to play it the way everyone else does... And, I guess it depends on what one wants to achieve. My goal is this (from day one); I want to be able to play whatever I want, and have the ability to improvise freely and simultaneously with both hands. Self accompaniment... It's why I bought the Stick... Just an opinion or two...

Not so sure about that. Addict? Yes, most likely. Drugs and booze bore me, though... haha

Re: "What to do" What to do, what to do...
The idea that your 2 hands are doing independent things was one of the reasons I had trouble attempting to learn piano back in the late 70s. My teacher, the late great Leon Russell who we lost yesterday, said: "the secret is that the hands are not doing 2 different things - they are doing one big interlocking thing". We were trying to teach each other the other's instruments - I was teaching him pedal steel and he was teaching me piano. Ultimately neither of us did very well on the other's instrument - but I always remembered what he told me and I found it equally applies to Stick.

You know, I hang out with this pianist who has WICKED hand independence, and he says the same thing. Wrapping my mind around the concept of two hands working together, but doing different things simultaneously to achieve one thing takes a bit of "mind-wrapping-around" hahaha
