Bubu anyone? I need to find new music and thought it would be fun to use a single older album as a jumping off point for inspiration to spark some ideas and suggstions. If I said, 'I think I am burnt out on prog. Based on this album, are there any new and more contemporary artists that would be worth checking out outside the prog scene?' Enjoy (or not). LIKE IT. (who are these dudes?) one album that always acts like a brain enema for me is "STEVE REICH Music for 18 Musicians" (ECM 1129). totally clenses my palette. |

I liked the violin solo. It's quite similar to the crazy shit that I do. Fun. I have that one on vinyl. Can't remember if it's spanish or south american... I really prefer the (70's) italian approach to prog over almost any other region. Another great band from spain was called ICEBERG. Monster guitarist, great keyboardist, fantastic writing. More in the RTF-fusion subgenre than prog, though. Thanks for the post! Kev |

I put Steve Reich into pandora to stir things up. @Tatsu I had a feeling you would have some ideas based on your posts. I always find your influences interesting. I will give your track a spin. thanks! @K Rex I've never heard of Iceberg. Thanks! @Olivier PFM and BMS, definitely. That there was something special about '70-'76 in a few regions--especially Italy. For anyone wanted to explore, these are worth checking out: Museo Rosenbach, Il Balletto di Bronzo, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Osanna, Le Orme, Premiata Forneria Marconi, il Volo, Quella Vecchia Locanda...etc. Then off you go in to obscurity. |

I am not a fan of Prog as a genre, but I still enjoy bands like Yes and King Crimson. There are times when it gets too dramatic or far out, but I still put it on while I am working or driving (<-true test), so there is still something intrinsically musical about it. Songs with vocals are of more interest to me these days, as my interest gets lost along the way without something to sing along to. I am simple like that. Four new bands that have intrigued me include Karnivool, a great band out of Australia. A bit fuzzy and dark, but a nice Soundgarden springboard if you enjoy that feel. Tesseract, a more traditional rock / prog band, meaningful lyrics, bitchen grooves and good songwriting. the Paper Kites and our own Kyle McCann and Giraffic Jam - which is everything you like about music AND a tenor player when you need it! Huge fan of the Paper Kites. Definitely much lighter and a GREAT video for a Thursday morning. This is a sweet song, hard not to smile watching this video. [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0IDiVQxZYg[/youtube] This video is dark, so I recommend just listening to it first and THEN watching the video. Definite contrast to Paper Kites track. Cut from a similar model of Karnivool. One of my favorite tracks is April. There is also a GREAT video of the bassist showing his part in detail without the fuzzy guitars. The new music will be like the first picture on this webpage. http://www.metamodernism.com/2013/04/24/the-anti-rebel/ combining opposites. The other link I gave before for Swanlight has music where a piano sound is played normally while backwards piano sounds are overdubbed with it: a combining of opposites. A combining of opposites also occur in the video for Swanlight. First the girl is shown spinning, then she's shown spinning by the videographer playing the video backwards. Later, she's approaching, then she's passed us and we can see her leaving. More opposites. Maybe future art will be both atonal and colorful. Ambiguity and clarity. That's what I'm working on now both in painting and in music. |
